    http://english.ruvr.ru/2012_12_06/17-US-warships-now-off-Syria/

Context: Syrian opposition are pissed off that the 'international community' attempted to choose their next leader before giving them serious help - in the meantime have welcomed a sizeable force of local and foreign extremist Islamic radicals who are literally and figuratively sacrificing their own lives to defeat Bashar.

10,000 us troops is less than half the "residual troops" in Iraq right now. A sizeable force. This is a massive expenditure. As much of an animal Assad is, there is, so far, no evidence that he plans to use chemical weaons. This seems to be a way to convince you guys that this is the right time to intervene. Russia is watching and amassing its own presence keenly - but nothing compared to The Empire.

Roughly 40,000 have died in Syria. NATO intervened in oil rich Libya after less than 1,000 died.

I wonder if anyone knows how many of these forces were already present and how many brought over from elsewhere?

    Proxy war with Russia?
    http://www.presstv.ir/detail/2012/08/28/258609/syrian-crisis-proxy-war-against-russia/

..."Russia began to cooperate in different fields --energy, defense, trade and so on-- with Egypt, Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran. This alarmed the US and Saudi Arabia, which understood that if Russia expanded its relations with all these countries, the Middle East would acquire a totally different appearance. That is why they sought to further reduce the Russian presence in the region by toppling two regimes that had traditionally been allies and trading partners of Russia: Libya and Syria. "
    ...
"Apart from their role in the Middle East, Russia fears that the victory of Saudi and Qatari-sponsored jihadist groups in Syria could also have a negative impact on the situation in Russia´s North Caucasus, where the Wahhabi insurgency is widespread, especially in regions as Chechnya and Dagestan. "
    ...

"Russian warships entered Syrian waters to inhibit foreign invasion. The same event led to different interpretations, making people wonder why the Russian aircraft carrier chose to visit Syria."

    WW3 oh noes!

Side note: You might notice more and more 'end times' warnings from Christians on the internet. In Ezekiel, an alliance of enemies will attack Israel in the end-times. The leader will be Gog of the land of Magog (Russia), who is the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal (Syria and Lebanon). He is assisted by Persia (Iran), Cush (Ethiopia), Put (Libya), Gomer, Beth Togarmah (Turkey)

Even if you don't believe in it, it's still interesting to follow.

Edgar Cayce predicted the possibility of a 3rd World War. He spoke of strifes arising..."in Libya, and in Egypt, in Ankara, and in Syria; through the straits around those areas above the Persian Gulf."

    *"oooOOOOoooooOoooo" in scary ghost voice*

Seriously? I'd be happy with an intervention. The problem right now is when we don't intervene the opposition has to rely on Islamic extremists to fight their fight for them, giving them disproportionate post-war power for setting up a new government afterwards.

I think this was obviously just an excuse for you to go on a misguided rant in a douchey way. Interesting news, stupid commentary.

I'm completely confused. Is it invading a foreign country that's an imperialist action or is it staying out and not caring as a bunch of brown people die an imperialist action? Help me out here.

    Mathloom --
Mad when the US ignores Syria.
Mad when the US takes interest in Syria.

Its become obvious that you have an agenda behind all of this.

I took exception to the Empire comment as well, but in a broader sense I think everyone's reacting in their own way to a really bad situation that could get a lot worse. But if the United States and Russia end up securing a proxy peace in a Middle Eastern country it's kind of a nice historical turning point. I don't know that we'll ever appreciate how badly we jointly destroyed Afghanistan pre-WOT.

Launching an invasion into a country with a large Russian naval base may not be the smartest course of action.

We might not have a choice. Under NATO rules, we have to intervene if a NATO member is attacked. Neither us nor the Russians are in any position to fight a large war, so hopefully they can at least try to work something out.

I'm also scared that we'll help overthrow Assad, but then do nothing as Syria becomes the next Somalia.

It's like deja vu about the 'eminent chemical weapons' story. It's probably saber rattling to get the Soviets off their asses to secure the stuff. Nobody wants to bomb a chemical depot. That stuff can work when you have a history of crazy.

At worst NATO may do a little surgical command and control bombing, you know, for humanity.

Iraq shows there is no good solution to sectarian revolution, it's a probable bloodbath either way. Good Luck Pootie!

Have you considered the problems though with arming a disorganized disparate rebel groups many who do not harbor good feelings for the US and other foreign governments? Have you considered the possibility of infighting among Syrian rebel groups before or after Assad falls in the absence of a recognized leadership structure?

Do you think that there are no circumstances that Assad might use chemical weapons. Anyway do you think this build up automatically means there is going to be a US intervention?

Syria and Libya are very different. Libya's population is much smaller and also had some form of recognized leadership in Benghazi.

Also regarding US aid to Syria the US has given around $200 mil in humanitarian aid to Syria.
    http://www.usaid.gov/what-we-do/wor...t/responding-times-crisis/where-we-work/syria

[rquoter]On November 14, Secretary Clinton announced that the United States is providing $30 million in additional humanitarian assistance to help those affected by the conflict in Syria. With this new assistance, the United States is providing nearly $200 million in humanitarian aid to help those suffering as a result of the Asad regime’s violence inside Syria and in neighboring countries.[/rquoter]

Anyway I personally think Syria has been very poorly handled by the US but this post just seems more like blame America. As another poster noted it is blame America for not intervening and blame America when it looks like they are intervening. Let me ask you this. What do you think America should do about Syria?
