Yes. I was trying to think of Cajuns, but what made it sound better, and they were all I could come up with. An NBA team can have the same name as a college. Cavaliers Grizzlies Blazers Hornets Bobcats Raptors Bulls Etc. If it were some big-time colllege, I'd care more
I like it. Sounds more like a WNBA name to me though. Actually most of the more realistic names I've heard in here remind me of WNBA names. Lets just move them to another city. I think that is easier than thinking of a good name for them. Seattle Supersonics has a nice ring to it.
Yeah, it'll happen whenever the Lakers decide to give their name back to Minnesota. Southern California/Los Angeles is not known for it's lakes.
They sound like WNBA names b/c you just haven't gotten used to it. The Thunder and Bobcats sounded like WNBA names, but are perfectly fine to me now that they have been in the league a bit. Althought i'd still like to see Charlotte return to the Hornets or Jordan put his stamp on the team. Charlotte Flight is a personal favorite. Does anyone know if the current Pelicans(trying to get used to it..not working) owner has the rights to the Hornets name and will be a douche and hold on to it instead of letting Jordan take it?
Hmm...just read this as a comment on other boards..don't know if true. "Adam Silver mentioned last year that the name change for Charlotte would be more simple than a team to rebrand because the league owns the rights to the Charlotte Hornets' name. "
No, sounds like WNBA because most of their teams don't end in S. Dream Lynx Fever Sun Storm Liberty Mercury Sky Shock 9 of 12 teams. Compare to NBA, which has 3 of 30: Magic, Heat, & Jazz
Good luck getting anyone to want to stay and play for that team. That's why crap teams always stay crappy. They don't know how to build a good brand to attract these young guys who want to look good when they play. Stupid old owners who don't know what's "hip." When no one shows up to games, i hope he sells it to Seattle so we can have the super freaking sonics back.
If you wanna get downright technical, there is no origin to the blues and that traces of it are found in Africa as it was brought over and evolved in US during slavery and segregation. It was really big in Mississippi around the turn of the 20th Century but did not start to become mainstream until the venues along Beale Street in Memphis began to receive national and eventually global attention. That's why Memphis is considered the hub of it though New Orleans wouldn't be a misfit for it in the way Jazz is for Salt Lake City. As far as the best fit goes, we know this: New Orleans=Jazz Memphis=Blues (yeah, I know about that hockey team) Houston=Screwed and chopped New York=Origin of hip hop Los Angeles=Gangsta rap Chicago=Stepping music Detroit=Motown and R&B Nashville=Country Music And I'm sure there's more, I just have an Afro-Centric view given who I am and my interest since a young age.
Pelicans are a better name then most of you think.. I mean you're entitled to your opinions and all but think about the best team names in the league... all not intimidating.. The worst ones however are and very forgettable.. Toronto Raptors Minnesota Timberwolves Memphis Grizzlies Golden State Warriors Charlotte Bobcats? These are the teams I often forget about, even when they are a playoff caliber team, it's the teams with geographic relevance that really stick out and last. Houston Rockets Boston Celtics New York Knicks Miami Heat San Antonio Spurs Portland Trailblazers Indiana Pacers Dallas Mavericks Milwaukee Bucks Orlando Magic (kingdom) Phoenix Suns I don't know like i said it's all opinion but the names on the lower list are just more timeless in my personal opinion. Mind you some of them have **** branding.
I wasn't trying to argue with you. Just said that's what I'd always thought. I am not an expert in Afro music.
Think it's pretty widely accepted that blues or the root of blues music comes from Western Africa. Whereas I believe the term "Blues" indicates an Americanization (particularly Deep South US) of the music, the sound/tone itself has distinct roots back to Western Africa. And for the folks that think that the Pelicans is cheesy. So is EVERY name when they trot them out - they all seem cliche until you put an identity to it. Even my beloved Bobcats sound cheeseball to some but when they play well - the name has cache. I mean who the heck is afraid of playing some pants rolled up to the knees (Knickerbockers)? Or team Disney (Magic)? Or a description of high temperature (Heat)? Or what find in your nose/your dog's food (Nuggets). Or the webbing of the basket (Nets). These are some pretty ridiculously bad names in a vacuum, but in context, they can all be badass. I am sure the Pelicans - if they put on a good show - will have equally as good an identity as more established names. Adam - an Ali Farke Toure fan
