"Pelicans"? That's one of the worst names I've ever heard. It has no business being anywhere near a professional sports franchise. If New Orleans does away with the Hornets name, the franchise needs to go back to a name that's relevant to something the city's known for...such as music, food, Mardi Gras. I like the "Blues" suggestion a few posts up. But ideally they'd get the "Jazz" name back. Utah can change their name to something more suitable for their region....maybe "Cheapshots" (to commemorate the dirty-play era of Malone/Stockton/Hornacek) or "Polygamists". Or if we want a less controversial name (and more boring), then maybe "Avalanche".
They need to just shorten it up to the "Cats" and be done with it. The obvious cheap shots of being called the P***y Cats or Scaredie Cats would be obvious but put a ferocious wildcats as the mascot and it becomes respectable. Plus, "Cats" has something to it, both in uniqueness and coolness that Bobcats doesn't. Louisiana Rajin Cajuns is already taken, that's the short athletic name for the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. Given that you put the "Rajin'" part in there, I'm sure you already knew that.
I thought "Pelicans" was a weird name at first, but I think I can get used to it. Has sort of a quirky vibe to it that I like.

If Charlotte get the Hornets name back alot of closet Charlotte fans will be around which would be great.
I'm surprised people don't know this. There was a former candidate for TX governor who shot one and held it up for the cameras thinking he had shot a dove. I thought his political career was completely over at that point (failing at hunting, shooting the state bird), but he won, and he kept on winning.
