Texans sign Routt before he can head to Pittsburgh

Posted by Darin Gantt on December 4, 2012, 2:00 PM EST

Apparently, Stanford Routt saw enough in Houston, and the Texans saw enough from Stanford Routt.

Cancelling a planned trip to Pittsburgh for another workout tomorrow, Routt has signed with the Texans, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.

Routt gives the Texans an experienced option, with Brice McClain going on injured reserve and uncertainty over the health of Johnathan Joseph and Alan Ball.

He also may have preferred the familiar surroundings, after growing up in Austin Tex., and playing in college at the University of Houston.

Nice. It gives him one more day to get familiar with the playbook. Great job on signing him before he left.

Sweet sweet sweet. Just saw that Ike Taylor could be/is out because of an ankle, so I was worried Pittsburgh might be desperate.

I love this signing. It gives us the opportunity to put Alan Ball back at gunner, where he was playing amazingly. If Routt can slide into the slot, and cover tight ends better than McCain, I'm REALLY loving this signing.

Awesome. It wasn't like McCain was lighting it up this year anyway. As long as he doesn't draw a flag on every play I think this might actually be an upgrade at nickel corner.

Go suck a bag of dicks, it's a very good signing considering the time of the season.

would you rather they not sign a db? all things considered this signing was absolutely necessary and having him here is light years better than having posey in there... unless, of course, you disagree.

Good Veteran signing for this time of year. Hopefully they will not have to use him. Those who are not familiar with Routt should realize that he can play tight coverage but was always one of the most penalized backs when he played for the Raiders and Chiefs.

Hopefully the Texans don't need him to play a lot of reps.

On a different note, what ever happened to Jason Allen? I see he's only played in one game with the bengals. Is he injured or is he just playing bad?

Most likely just the minimum for the rest of the year.

He already made a good amount of money this year from guaranteed money.

He is playing for his next contract.
