A street FA overachieving would be my guess. We got Allen off the scrapheap and he actually played decently while he was here.
Exactly. The secondary doesn't need a world-saver. Just someone who can man up on slot receivers and TE's, and occasionally an outside WR. Doesn't have to be lockdown, just serviceable. The ability to make plays, but not necessarily a playmaker. If Routt can provide that, then anything additional would be gravy.
don't know why anybody is questioning this move. we were ready to put devier posey in as an emergency DB. even if routt doesn't come in and play as good as he did at his best, his experience at CB is >>>>> devier posey at CB.
Stanford Routt visiting Pittsburgh too Posted by Josh Alper on December 4, 2012, 10:37 AM EST It’s a good time of the year to be a veteran cornerback looking for work. Injuries open up opportunities in secondaries and you’re likely to be contacted by teams in playoff contention who don’t want to rely on untested players in the final weeks. Stanford Routt has two such teams on the line right now. As Darin Gantt noted earlier, Routt is working out for the Texans on Tuesday after Houston lost cornerback Brice McCain for the season on Sunday. With Jonathan Joseph and Alan Ball also ailing, Houston could use some help right now. So could Pittsburgh. Ike Taylor is going to be out for a while and the Steelers want a look at Routt as well. John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports that Routt will head to Pittsburgh after meeting with the Texans. If Routt does land with either team, it will continue a strange year for the cornerback. He got dumped by the Raiders and Chiefs while pocketing about $11 million, but could wind up in the playoffs with a team that has more wins than the two teams he used to play for combined.
Routt can be a very productive player but he has to be used right. You cannot just throw him out there. My gut says the Steelers will get him.. but he is from Texas, played at UH and the Texans > Steelers......
Steelers could get him more PT and exposure for his next contract. It'll be tough for him to turn that down if he will only be a nickel and dime package DB here (and expected to play ST).
Pancakes is confirming the signing..... my guess is he was at The Waffle House throwing down a dozen pancakes when he read it from Berman.
an upgrade over carmichael but i don't see him jumping to #2. Kareem has become a heck of a player. Joseph/Kareem/Stanford/Harris/ball. Come at us, tecmo bowl offenses.
No way he leaps Jackson, but with Joseph's injury history he may get a start. He will be huge against the Pats if we face them in the playoffs and the Giants or Packers if we were to face them in the Super Bowl. Overall a very good signing, we really needed a break and may have gotten it.
Nice! This is a big deal going forward if he can give us good play - we're in terrible need of someone to cover the third and fourth receivers against spread offenses.
