Nucky putting a bullet in Margaret for sleeping with the "help", then taking the kids back home would've made this episode fantastic. But that's just me. They had a chance to write her off, and they didn't take it, so I'm 99% sure she'll be back next season. It's just bizarre for a show to be so attached to it's lead actress but to make her character so non-compelling and eye-roll worthy.

Richard Harrow's timing on attacking Gyp's strong hold was perfect.

Think they opened up a few story threads for next season, Rothenstein getting set up to get taken down by Nucky is the first thing that comes to mind.

the whole nucky sacrifices one of his own was an overstatement, nucky has never really cared about doyle

the scene with masseria, rothstein, myer and lucky was pretty good,

gyp's nucky impression freaked me out a little, i thought dude lost his last marble

looking forward to see what direction they take it next season

You don't know that Doyle turned on Nucky. I assumed it was Nucky putting out the 'big bait' to catch the 'big rat'. Nucky doesn't leave things up to chance. He was expecting that call pretty much. As quick as he thinks on his feet, he accepted that deal real quick because he knew it was coming and he wanted it done.

Yes, at first I thought Doyle had flipped on him but Nucky's reaction pretty much cemented it was all part of the plan.

Bobby Cannavale's Gyp may go down as one of the best one season villains. John Lithgow as Trinity in Dexter is the only recent one that comes close. Loved the "gangwar" montage in the beginning.

Good episode, though the dialogue had me smh at some points. Have to say I'm a bit concerned going forward.

I'm not sure if Doyle is the fall man or in on the con. Either way, I do know that he was doing Nucky's bidding. Nucky was giving up on trying to be king again, until his brother said something like, "you're the idea guy, you just have to give something people want."

I too agree with the very good, but not great sentiment, only because the past few episodes have been great. There were many very good scenes within this episode: Massarea and Rosetti; Gillian and Rosetti; Massarea and Rothstein... I think the best thing about this season finale was that it did a good job of wrapping up story lines while opening avenues for new ones without leaving some stupid 9 month cliffhanger. It satisfied my Boardwalk thirst and I'll be ready to start all over again for season 4.

agreed. Can't stand her anymore. Whenever she's on, i don't pay attention. Nucky should have blasted her in her stomach with a shotty.

There is nothing to really say that Doyle would still be there by the time the authorities arrive. My impression of what happened is this:

    1) Nucky was supposed to be getting the distillery back in operation for Mellow in exchange for his help against Daugherty. Presumbably most, if not all of the profits would go to Mellow.

    2) Nucky exchanged 99% of the ownership of the distillery to Rothstein in exchange for his help, even though Nucky didn't technically own it in the first place.

    3) Nucky let it leak that Rothstein had taken over the distillery, probably without telling Mellow that it happened because Nucky cut a deal with him. Mellow contacted Esther Randolph to get rid of him. He was basicly reclaiming his property.

It's Mellon, btw, as in Andrew Mellon of Carnegie Mellon fame.
And yes, Nucky let Mellon know that Rothstein was taking over the distillery but I assume he made it sound like he was forced out. So Mellon, not one to suffer fools, took action.

So Nucky gave up the chances to be the biggest bootlegger in the country to guarantee survival instead of taking his chances on winning the war himself? Good or bad call?

Well, there's no reason why Nucky can't get back into it. He baited and trapped AR. Nucky survives and now has the law cracking down on AR, who already had that whole Black Sox scandel go down not too long before.

I think there will be other opportunities for him down the line. For right now, I think he made the right call. He repairs his relationship with Rothstein a little with this decision also. Richard was epic.

    Harrow was spectacular this episode!

Glad we got a big dose of Chalky in the final 2 episodes. I'm also looking forward to more Capone next season.
