Y'all really want Petersen that bad? There's no guarantee with that guy. Besides, he was even better the first time when his name was Dan Hawkins. Petersen over Mack Brown? After all he's done for that program? Really? For Chris Petersen? Sheesh. I liked Charlie Strong for TAMU last year but UT is out of his league and I don't see them removing Brown then making a ballsy hire like Strong or the Stanford coach.
After the success of Sumlin, I'd think Aggies of all people would see the merits in Chris Peterson instead of going for some hotshot DC that's never been a head coach or run a program.
I agree, Petersen over Strong (who does run a program) -- I simply like Strong and wanted to mention his name. I wouldn't pat the AD on the back and crown him if he went Strong over Petersen. Personally, I prefer Strong's pedigree. What I'm saying is... Petersen over Mack Brown?! If Sumlin is the best case, then Hawkins is the worst case... or you could just play it safe with Mack Brown (play it safe with a guy that's proven he can win and compete in title games - wow) and wait for the inescapable cycle of mediocrity every program must endure to pass. Mack Brown is a great, proven coach. There's no guarantee Petersen will do anything there other than put in an offense. C'mon man. You guys better ride the tide with Mack Brown if y'all cant grab a proven tier 1 coach otherwise you risk setting the program back in a big way with a mis-hire. Look at Tennessee. Mack Brown's resume - he's recruited Heisman winners, won a title. The candidates mentioned, "oooh, he's young, he's hip, he likes to throw the ball" -- sweet.
Playing it safe is the whole problem with the program. Ohio State didn't play it safe. Florida didn't play it safe. A&M didn't play it safe. Oklahoma didn't play it safe. All of those teams got unproven guys and had success. Fear of change or taking risks is the fundamental flaw at Texas right now. That goes all the way up to the head coach. There's no guarantee that Mack Brown fixes things either - he's shown no signs at all of having any idea how to do that thus far. The program is already being set back. Fear of failure is a terrible reason to stick with a coach. He's also won 2 conference titles in 15 years with arguably the best recruiting in the nation over that period. Mack Brown does less with more than any major program coach in America except maybe Lane Kiffin. The appeal of a Chris Peterson, the Stanford coach, etc is that you know you'll get the most out of the players you have - and assuming he can recruit in Texas, that's a very good sign.
Play it safe and wait for the inescapable cycle of mediocrity to pass? No thanks. There's way too much talent on the roster to let it go to waste IMO. I definitely hear what you're saying with guys like Hawkins and Dooley flopping horribly but like Major put it, the fear of failure isn't a legitimate excuse for the status quo, especially when the status quo is crap right now.
It's amazing how one play can make a person change their entire offensive scheme. If Colt never gets hurt and we end up winning that game. Mack retires and gives Muschamp the job. Instead we got Mack for 3 + years of really bad football. Mack Brown without VY or Colt against OU is like 1-8. That tells me Mack can't win without a really good QB. I think expectations this year were 9-3 to 10-2 and we might end up 8-5 again. We are just not that good of a football team right now and it's not because a lack of talent, it's coaching. If Mack retires I hope we go after someone who is an X's and O's coach, not some politician. Also give me a spread option offense and a dual threat QB. My guess is we hire Patterson or Peterson.
Loved this article when I read it yesterday. Most t-shirt fans would off themselves for lack of a name if one of those three were hired. And the Gruden stuff needs to stop, no way in hell that happens.
Sweet...manziel will stay for the simple reason that, despite his success at this level, he doesn't fit the NFL mold. I see him struggling a bit next season and coming back for strong junior and senior seasons in which he is in the heisman conversation both seasons. I think a bigger factor will be the future of the o line. A&M dominated o line recruiting and evaluation under Sherman. Don't see that as the case with sumlin.
I'm glad this the 2nd to last game that we see these two QBs ever start for the Horns. Brewer and/or Swoopes can't be any worse than Ash and McCoy.
Played 1 good half of football. Not going to get it done. Cotton Bowl it is. At least OU doesn't win the Big 12 as a result of K-State's win.
DeLoss will not fire Mack Brown. His legacy will be hanging on to Mack too long and a network with fewer national viewers than CSN Houston.
