What a tragic series or events, I have always looked at a suicide as the most cowardly acts one can do. The fact that he killed his GF in front of his own mother is just appalling. This guy is a complete fool and has left his family a mess that they will probably never be able to get past.
Dementia is not a definitive sign of traumatic brain damage. Depending on how long the subject has been suffering, it could be caused by anything from simple long term alcoholism to neurodegenerative disease, early onset Alzheimer's, many other diseases and infections (meningitis, enchaphalitis), numerous genetic conditions, a stroke, or altered brain chemistry. Realist, even if we get something out of "The Last Boy Scout", I doubt Americans will ever see football as "too barbaric". It's part of the American fabric now, and will be nearly impossible to remove. I could, however, see some governmental limp wristed hand wringers trying to regulate the sport in the interests of "safety", which will probably go about as well as any governmental intrusion works.

Too many people coming to conclusions in this thread without much information available to the public.
Boxing and Baseball used to be the biggest sports in america. AOL used to be the internet. Everyone used to some. Things change. As more evidence comes out about brain trauma you think suburban mom is going to let johnny play football? Or once the lawsuits get decided will highschool and colleges even want to continue?
I'm not trying to justify it but nobody knows whether mental illness played a part or if it didn't, nobody knows if he woke up and did this or had it planned out, nobody knows if head injuries played a part and it goes on and on. In fact, nobody knows much of anything that happened except a horrifically tragic event that left a child parentless and more than likely 2 families questioning "why?". All I am saying is people need to stop acting like they know what happened and wait for the facts to come out.
How far has the NFL fallen in popularity in it's 90+ years of existence? Oh wait, it's gotten more popular. It will change with the times and will remain popular for the forseeable future. Forget the banks, the NFL is too big to fail, and barring overwhelming stupidity should remain so for quite some time. I love how the word lawsuit is being tossed around, and that people seem to think that if something goes wrong they have the right to sue someone, anyone. Football is a voluntary activity. Schools have waivers that free themselves from liability. Helmet manufacturers have the NOCSAE warning that help protect them. In fact, I put forward the hypothesis that the threat of lawsuits actually harms player safety with regards to helmets. Say a helmet manufacturer comes up with a radical new design that could revolutionize player safety. However NOCSAE, always wary of the looming threat of lawsuits, refuses to certify it because it doesn't match up with their stringent guidelines. Is any manufacturer going to take all the risk on their own and get it built? Is anyone going to buy a helmet that isn't NOCSAE certified? Nope, and who's to blame for that? The lawsuit-happy American society, that's who.
There is something very, very wrong with you. Suicide prevention is centered around the premise of people getting help for their problems before bad action is taken. In this case, the proper diagnosis and treatment possibly could have prevented either death. Anytime a young person takes a life (including their own), it is a tragedy. How anybody could find attempts to prevent such tragedies "misguided" is simply boggling.
The fact that they're playing this game tomorrow is so absurd. The league ought to be ashamed. If I'm Romeo Crennel I don't take the field.
Crenelated witnessed one of his players commit suicide today. I would imagine that prepping for tomorrow's game is the last thing on his mind right now.
