7 You have to give him credit for building a super bowl contender, and finding guys like Arian Foster. You have to knock him for his salary cap management, which hampered the team this past offseason.
I'm still a firm believer that Asomugha is better than Joseph. Switch their teams right now, Asomugha might be up there with Watt for DPoY. Don't get me wrong, I've seen Asomugha this season, this isn't the case in our universe. But in that alternate reality where we would have Asomugha... Joseph & Manning is still the better deal.
I would also give Smith an 8. He has made mostly good moves and represents the Texans with class. At least he hasn't mooned partygoers at a hotel unlike a former Houston GM. If Smith keeps up the good, work we may find him looking for greener pastures.
This is a battlered blog from last year but paints a less than flattering pic of Rick Smith. Former players Ahman Green and Marcus Coleman weigh in on their thoughts on him. http://www.battleredblog.com/2011/6/22/2238380/rick-smith-will-the-real-texans-gm-please-stand-up [rquoter]But of all the stories Green related, none got him more angry and indignant than the one he told about Rick Smith. Apparently sometime before or after the Oakland game in 2007, Rick Smith called Green into his office and asked him if he was faking injury. To ask an athlete that is to question their integrity. As Green said around the 10:05 mark: So when he asked me that... it took everything in my power not to do something that I would've regretted. So, I removed myself from his office and immediately called my agent and was like, "Man, get me outta here before I do something I don't wanna do".[/rquoter] [rquoter]Speaking of alienating players, Coleman claims that Smith worked his way up the ladder in Denver by being a mole in the locker room. About 10 minutes into the clip, Coleman describes his take on Smith's job duties: From some of the things I've heard from guys on the inside, Rick doesn't do a whole lot... there's not a lot of decision making by Rick Smith. So who's really the GM? Is it Kubiak? Is it, ya know, Mr. McNair's son? I mean, is it the head trainer? Like, who's really the GM?[/rquoter]
Just teams with a bigger market. New york, etc... I am just speculating, but think Hunsicker may have done something similar.
I'm not sure what Smith does. Who really makes the decisions for the Texans. I assume Smith negotiates contracts, but I don't know how much input he has on personnel decisions.
There are only a few markets bigger than Houston, plus it is one of the most valuable sports franchises in the world according the Forbes. I think he is fine where he is at.
everyone's making a lot of assumptions in here. Giving him credit for certain players, taking away credit for certain players or coaches based on unsubstantiated information and complete gut feelings Without evidence to the contrary, I think he needs to be given credit for what a GM typically does if you're going to evaluate him as a GM. Players, coaches, draft, and the like As for my thoughts on the subject...the guy has been great of late. I commend him for making the tough decisions related to the cap. I don't like the right side of the o line better, but I do think it was a necessary way to handle things. 10
It's hard to tell who does the GM decisions in the NFL. Well, besides Jerry Jones being a royal screw-up and Belichick being a genius.
where are the eagles are now? the "dream team" is not going to have a winning record for the last 2 seasons. while the texans are going to the playoffs for 2nd time in 2 years. what players: Aso - playing awful rodgers-cromartie - average asante samuel - already traded jason babin - already released Vick - they gave him a huge contract, and its been hurt most of the time or fumbling the ball when he is playing. they retained McCoy, thats good for them.
Bill Polian was a genius too until peyton got hurt. I think NFL more than any other league is about luck. You just have to get hot at the right time. If Smith knew foster was so good you think they would have gave him a shot early. They gave him a shot after slaton and moats were hurt.
The Eagles were a more than competent team since our franchise has existed. Catching them in their first losing season since 2005 is ignoring the fact that they've been a well run team for more than a decade. All the players you mentioned were great grabs for them, and all ruined by a horrible DC mis-hire. Turning Kolb into DRC and a 2nd? Asomugha is playing awful but is anyone going to deny that he has the talent to be a top 5 corner? Vick's contract was bad, and I still don't like the Foles pick, but Vick played out of his mind in 2010, and most teams would try to lock that up. The same time when most fans here wanted both HC and GM gone. Fixed by a wonderful DC hire.
The tough decisions related to the cap, and his contracts got the team into that certain cap predicament right? We're certainly looking at a super bowl caliber team here. But there are definite flaws in the team, them being calculated risks or not, that can't earn Smith a 10 until the team is Super Bowl bound.
Rick doesn't 'Give Shots', the coaches do. I don't think Rick gets on the phone and says GARY . . . PUT IN FOSTER NOW!!! you cannot blame him for those type of decisions . . . who plays and who doesn't belongs on the coaches. . . and I don't think it should be any other way Rocket River
No, I'd say his contracts go the team into the predicament because he accumulated enough talent that it became unwieldy. Winston wasn't super overpaid. Nor was Demeco. etc.
