Even with that strategy scoring 138 points is tough to do.

Even not being guarded 138 points is tough to do.

Very true. But 0 assists when you shot 101 shots and your team scored 178 points is also tough to do, even if you try not to get any assists.

    Jack Taylor's 138 points

No one in the Dish seems to be talking about this, but I thought it might be thread worthy.

This kid, Jack taylor, broke the NCAA record for most points in a game with 138.

He plays in Div III, and let me tell you Div III sucks, I saw the footage. He also jacked up 108 shots, but 138 is still a big number.

    Thoughts? Are you guys impressed?

LBJ compared this guys numbers to Wilt and Kobe.

    here's an article

Also, interesting side-note: A kid on the other team scored 70 (34-44). Pretty impressive losing stats.

138 is an impressive number, but after watching the actual game footage, it's not very impressive. Div III sucks.

So you saw one game of Div III, and it sucks? Grinnell is not a good D3 school, and IIRC, their opponent was not even Div III. Look up facts first.

I was mildly impressed when I saw this happened in a DIII game. After reading that Deadspin expose I think its just pathetic how anyone involved can act like this is anything they should be proud of. There is a reason that coach has been so sucessfull yet hasn't left DIII. He and people that actually know basketball know he's a fraud and his "system" can't work anywhere else. It doesn't even work now, Grinnel has NEVER won a basketball championship. Just a bunch of "records"

I was impressed until I looked at the box score/highlights.

When you don't even attempt to look to pass and jack up 100+ shots, you BETTER put up 138 points. Hell....the dude didn't even shoot 50 percent from the field, so I can't say he put up some insane scoring effort. I'd be much more impressed with 60-70 points on 70% shooting.

Pretty disgraceful by the coach to allow this to happen, and the kid is a pretty big douche for thinking 1 on 5 basketball is the way it's supposed to be done. I know if I were his teammate, I'd be upset, and I'm honestly surprised he didn't get a pretty good elbow by the other team.

It's not that difficult to score 138 points if you can take 100+ shots while not being guarded. If you can shoot about 50% from three during practice, you'll easily break 138.

And I took a look at the actual full footage of the game. I had to stop after about the first 10 minutes, it was that disgusting. Dude was missing shot after shot, and the other team was absolutely terrible, my Ph.D. pick-up game buddies can put up a much better fight. Any solid High School team would destroy that team.

The coach manipulated the system as much as he could legally to get these results. He is known for looking at getting his players in record books. The team has been found to target weak opponents on the schedule and try to break record then, this was the case. The team employs a full court press in which 2 players are on the inbounder and essentially this leaves a player wide open for a layup (other team's player scoring 70+). The coach then subs out his players every lik4 45 seconds for a another set of 5 players (3 lineups of 5 he has). But on these occasions he subs in 4 and keeps the player (jack taylor) all game and then give him all the shots. Since they use the full court. Taylor is the player who hardly passes half court.

Although all this is legal, it takes away from the integrity of the game. I do not feel he is an amazing player but a player who is benefitted by the system.

He shot less than 50% from the field and was 21 - 70 something from the field. Not impressed. Hes just a ballhog

I would say he benefitted from the system, but shooting less than 50% at this level, even as a guard, is not benefitting.

The only thing to say about this is that he took as many shots as anyone could have ever imagined in one game. At least his arms were able to keep chucking, but otherwise, there is just nothing impressive about it to me.

    Lol, what?

I have to star in Div I basketball to say Div III sucks? By your logic you're not allowed to critique any NBA player unless you're Basketball HOFer.

Dude, did you even watch the game footage. I watched the whole game, and let me tell you, that feat was nearly as hard as it must have been to jack up those 100+ shots.

All hyperbole aside, I am still impressed just by the raw number of 138, but watching the game footage really took away a lot of the sparkle of the achievement.
