Shooting 34.8% over 13 games is not as uncommon as you think. I've posted this twice before on CF and so far no one has given me a decent rebuttal. Since the 1985-86 season, there have been 293 players that shot worse than 34.8% over 13 or more games, including Hall of Famers Clyde Drexler (he did it two times), Reggie Miller, as well as All-stars Vince Carter (2 times), Allen Iverson (2 times), Chauncey Billups (9 times), Sam Cassell, Baron Davis (5 times), Tim Hardaway (3 times), Mark Jackson (2 times), Jason Kidd (12 times), Paul Pierce, Peja Stojakovic (2 times), Russell Westbrook (3 times), and Deron Williams (2 times). Now I'm not saying shooting 34.8% is by any means good or even acceptable. I'm just saying if these other guys have all shot even worse than Lin in the past on multiple occasions, even during their primes, then maybe you guys should cut Lin, who's a 3rd year player going on his 39th start some slack. I agree with this. Lin has a long way to go in terms of developing NBA-level point guard skills. I think a lot of this has to do with his being a combo guard (PG & SG) in college. Some of it has to do with the level of competition he faced (much easier to get your shot against Ivy League defenders than NBA defenders), and some of his struggles right now, I think, are the switch in offensive systems and that his knee still doesn't have the power it did pre-surgery. Lin has to get better at ball handling and shooting. I don't think anyone could really argue otherwise. On the other hand, one of the reasons I believe in his upside is because of his 'lack' of skills. He got this far even without a great handle or a particularly good shot. So, imagine if he can develop those things, what he could do. Lin does not have the array of moves or skill in shooting that someone like a James Harden does. He just doesn't. But that doesn't mean he can't develop his own go-to moves and shooting capacity. Lin is an excellent athlete with natural court vision and passing ability. He has good size for an NBA point guard. He has a high basketball IQ. His skill level is not yet at the same level as some of his natural abilities. But, for example, neither is Asik's offensive skill level where he wants it nor is it at the same level as his defensive skill level. This team is young and filled with potential. The most polished of the young guys is probably Harden. Delfino is a highly-polished shooting specialist. But he is older than the rest of the guys. Lin just needs to keep working on his skill level. Nothing wrong with that. So does basically every player in the league who isn't like a 15-year veteran.

You are the one who has used the word "numerous" for exaggeration. But you failed to find even more than one example to support your claim. All you are trying to do now is to look for a ladder to exit. Your behavior is as cowardice as one can get. Very true and I agree with what you are saying. However, I feel different about his upside. You make a valid point about his lack of skills being an indicator of interest for potential. However, I feel that his skill/upside is not up to par with what we have on the roster or what i am envisioning. This is a rebuilding process, I understand that. But our end product or in my prespective, the end product is that this core with a few additions should contend by the time we are developed. Therefore, I see players like Harden, Parsons, TJones, Asik, and DMo as players who can contend after this rebuild is complete or can reach a level/ have the future in which they can make an impact. Watching Lin does not give me the hope that in the time we are ready to contend, he will be at that level as he is so behind in being a top pg in this league. I like to end this post by saying that I hope Lin proves me wrong because it would be best for the rockets and that is what its all about.

Regarding Lin's ceiling: I disagree with your expectations of Lin. He has already shown us his ceiling when he played with the Knicks. What I saw from him individually was an excellent pick n' roll player who had above average vision, solid defense, and a respectable shot. Here in Houston, we aren't able to see his PnR abilities mainly because Asik is terrible at settings screens. That doesn't take away Asik's defensive capabilities, but setting good screens is obviously a part of his lack of offensive game. Lin's court vision is also not as impressive as his Knicks days. This is because he is no longer the primary ball handler and is carefully watching his turnovers. Passes that he might have seen and attempted in the past are discarded. That doesn't take away from the pass crossing his mind, and in my opinion once he gets into rhythm with his shot and the Houston offense, he will be much more comfortable and his assists will only climb. Regarding his defense and shot, well, they're two aspects of his game that have been analyzed and talked about over and over. He's a great, underrated defensive player and his shot is simply not falling right now. When people say Jeremy Lin is struggling they're talking solely about his shooting percentages. I myself am hesitant to say that Lin will recover to shoot 44%+ this year. But if he can get his shot to the low-40%'s I say he has a good chance of improving. His FT% are excellent and he shot well with the Knicks. However, if he doesn't improve his shot over the course of this season I don't have much hope for him. Barring an incredible miracle he'll likely be a terrible shooter for the majority of his career. Anyways, I'm pinning my hopes on Jeremy Lin recovering to be a 41-43% shooter by the end of the year. Shooting decently well opens up the rest of his offensive game, whether it be dishing, driving, or passing. And since he's already solid defensively, he would be on par with everyone else on this Rockets team. I think, come 3 years, Lin could be a very important role player for a contending Rockets team.
You better get your fact straight before make any comment. His high school is Div. 2, and Harvard is Div I. He was the first Mr. Basketball of California in Div 2. didn't get any recruit, and that's a fact. I don't have any problem with the criticism to Lin's performance, that's the right & freedom of any sports fan. The problem is that many on this board jumped on Lin, not because of his performance. Other than not shooting well, Lin has played solid in most of games so far this year. But it's obvious that poor shooting has got to him in the last few games, and has been playing hesitating in the last few games. He needs to stay aggressive to attack the basket, which will open up a lot of other options for him. Otherwise, he could be on the way to the bench once the Rockets can get a decent backup PG, or if TD can play better.
In your case, Mr. jose, your criticisms of Lin have been non-constructive. You haven't mentioned what Lin could improve on but you have outlined everything that would prevent Lin from being even an average PG. I hate to use the word "racism" but you have to show me something that's going to convince me otherwise.
Nice post. A lot of stuff that you said is completely true. However, one of my things with Lin is that I do not believe he has above average court vision. A lot ofthe times he makes the right passes, but his turnovers as well as just watching him ndicates that he often makes the wrong decsision. This is aside from the turnovers he gets from his poor handles. I also have a hard time understanding when people say he has high basketball IQ, yet also say that he still needs to learn the offense (this is not towards you but an aside in general). I also disagree about his defence being so great. He is an average defender and his hustle and steals show that. But using his steals as an indicator for defensive skill is inaccurate (see Iverson). Aside from him being torched at times this season, he has also shown to play stretches of good d. His problems once again lie with his decisions. I have seen many a time when he has left his man to help when he should not have (ie. blazers game 1). He also fails to recover quickly after making a mistake. Finally, you state that his ceiling is his knicks stretch. In my prespective, a player's ceiling is when they can play at that level consistently. Although he did for 25 or so games in New York, the sample size is too small for me to agree with you. Your statements about him not showing the skills he has from his knicks days shows that he cannot consistently preform at that level, thus not being his ceiling imo. I see his knicks stretch as what he can do when he is in "beast/god mode" (like scola had at the start of 2 seasons ago). Its when a player goes off but will in the future die down to their normal level of play. I hope to see Lin shoot +40% and improve on the aspects that we discussed. If he can do that, which is going to be tough, by theend of the season, their is hope. However, as I stated earlier, Lin should not be a part of our core going forward ( a backup maybe but not with the money hes getting paid).

But I'm black I was born in Houston and raised in NY, in Houston the biggest rockets fans I knew were black YAO MING FANS!! Some of the biggest linsanity fans are black. Just because many black fans like Yao Ming and Jeremy Lin doesn't mean there aren't a ton of racist blacks out there who hate on Yao and Lin b/c they're Asian, i.e. Mayweather, SA Smith, Rob on ESPN, Jason Whitlock, etc. I think most people out there are ignoring purposely or not the most important point: 1) Jeremy Lin is the first full-blooded Asian American NBA player to achieve such success, 2) He is the ONLY player of east asian descent to play in the NBA now. Just imagine what it's like to be the ONLY black/white/hispanic person in an organization with hundreds or people, with a ton of them hating on you b/c of the color of your skin.
This thread is getting to be a debate about America the racial inequality. In a heterogeneous society like America, you will always have racism. It is not insane to openly acknowledge that we form our opinions based on race. In Lin's case, I find it amusing that Asian people are so divided. Some of the LOHs are clearly Asians but they seem to be angry that Lin is getting so much publicity. Jealousy much? Just curious, what do WWII death camps get to do with Lin?

I made the point that real racism was black people not being able to eat at restaurants because they were black, next thing I know he is talking about WWII camps in america which held Asian people. I agree that is also real racism but what does it have to do with how Lin is being treated? It's as if they believe that black people hate Lin and it's simple not true.

spot on I agree. Lin has not been playing well, and media exposure is a constant reminder of his bad games to us fans . Truth is I don't think he deserves any post games interviews yet. The Lof is only adding gasoline to the fire by blaming his bad games on others and praising him when he doesn't deserve it. so you can say the hatred is reaction to the unconditional praise. We are not stupid at his current level of game, he should be benched it's the fact that he isn't that anger us fans. lin has what it takes to play in NBA but until his shooting percentage is better he doesn't deserve his starting position yet. His race also plays a part, but it's a fact of life if you are an outsider you have gotta work hard. For example Carlos Gosh the CEO of Nissan from Brazil is well respected by japanese people who are known for not being friendly to foreign workers. LOL. I am telling you some of the proclamations made here are comedy club worthy. Just to clear the air, good Lin or bad Lin is still a Rocket Lin. He doesn't walk on water. He is not the next Nash but he is also not un-NBA worthy like some of the LOHs like us to believe. I am glad Lin is in Houston. This forum has come back to life.
