Man, talk about putting words in my mouth. What I asked was whether or not durvasa considered mental illness to be "medical" or "actual" and in the context of his earlier post it wasn't a weird question.

I've never supported or defended White's actions. I've just tried to bring a different perspective to issues surrounding mental illness. I explicitly said earlier in the thread that mental illness was not an excuse for bad behavior.

But I also reminded everyone, more than once, that crazy people often say and do crazy things. I don't know why it is always such an outrageous surprise when a crazy person acts crazy. White is saying and doing crazy, destructive things and one day, probably soon, he's going to wake up from it and be very, very remorseful.

As for the "exploiting a loophole" thing though, and this has nothing to do with Royce White, you would never say that about a different sort of illness. And if the illness were other than mental illness I expect that even you yourself would find it in poor taste for someone to suggest the sufferer was faking his or her suffering.

As I recall people said McGrady exploited his situation. And he had a serious medical problem: the whole not having cartilage in his knees thing. So I think you're being just a bit sensitive with the whole "people would never say that about another illness" bit.

Okay, let's cut him already and be the first NBA team to sign an WNBA man lady... That should be enough to drown out the pro White idiots.

I see your point and I admit to having been one of the people that accused McGrady of sloth. I think I also said it looked to me like depression. But I'm aware I probably project my own characteristics onto others.

I think of McGrady's illness as of a different kind, most especially since it isn't an illness; it's an injury. And the injury is existential to his career but not to his life (as Mourning's was). And though it will likely inhibit his quality of life in his later years, it will do so in a less crippling way* than say major depressive disorder or perhaps cancer. (*Pun intended.)

Emotional disorders, personality disorders, major depression, bipolar, anxiety... they are diseases that take control from within. I do not suggest that we forgive the bad behavior but please let's not act like we don't know where it's coming from.

It's coming from a place that is way more ****ed up than a torn ACL.

    Is this adeelsiddiqui or ASidd1990?

    Embarrassing.

Tweets like this just make him feel even more like he is justified in his self-serving "cause", whatever it is.

Dude has gone on a tweet-a-thon in the middle of the night.

Amazing that Royce has a mental illness AND a raging idiot all at the same time. Almost impossible to climb out of that one.

Go 'head and continue to lose more fans by the day in addition to $$, brah #anxietytroopers #soontobebroke

I don't think he's an idiot or suffering from any sort of narcissism. Rather a young man with a problem who doesn't know how to deal with it. If he wasn't being paid by our favorite pro basketball team, I doubt we'd be as offended. But I find tweets like those from Mr. Siddiqui far more objectionable.

Did Royce really threaten legal action? I don't remeber that.

Sorry if this doesn't really fit the topic, but didn't feel like starting a "Royce White Tweet Watch" thread.

It may make me a bad person or whatever, but I laughed pretty hard at this. It's harsh, but getting to be fair. I love how he so far has blamed the Rockets for everything and attempted to absolve himself of all fault when they are seemingly doing more than Iowa St. ever could/would do for him and showed a lot of faith in him on draft night. Faith that has so far not been returned. Dude needs to either at least TRY to get on the court or retire so he can write poetry, produce music, or whatever he's going to try to do and the Rockets can move on.

I feared long ago that Royce might walked away from NBA before his contract expires. Events that unravelled recently had turned that fear into hope.

I hope Royce would just walk away from NBA if Morey can't trade him. This will leave a roster slot for someone more deserving.

Yes, Royce, YOU DON'T DESERVE TO BE A ROCKET!

I don't think the guarantee contract will come off the cap. The only option for a bad contract to come off it is amnesty, and it was used already by Scola.

However, I do believe the best option for Rockets is for Royce to 'walk away' from NBA and techically voids his contract. Not only it will save Les money, it should also leave a roster spot.

If Bima Thug is reading this, please help clearify on this matter.

He'll probably go on to make a decent living doing speaking engagements on "the stigma of mental illness in the work place" once his NBA playing (or not playing, rather) days are over.

you'll open a roster spot, you'll just have his ~1.7 mil on your cap for these two guaranteed years. Which will limit your ability to sign new players a little.

To answer some of the questions presented:

--First round picks who are signed to their rookie scale contracts have a fully guaranteed salary for at least TWO seasons, with the team holding options on the player for each of Year 3 and Year 4. However, the team must exercise its option a full year in advance. Royce's salary is guaranteed through the 2013-14 season; and the Rockets will need to decide by October 31, 2013 as to whether to exercise Royce's third year option and guarantee his salary through the 2014-15 season.

--Even if the Rockets had not used their amnesty on Luis Scola, they couldn't use it on Royce. Only contracts signed under the prior CBA could be amnestied. Royce's rookie deal is under the current CBA. They could, however, waive him and spread his remaining salary over multiple years via the "Stretch Provision" of the current CBA. Regardless, Royce's salary is so (relatively) low that it wouldn't have a material impact on the Rockets' cap situation either way.

--It is conceivable if BOTH Royce and the Rockets agreed to void his contract that Royce's salary could come off the Rockets' books for cap purposes. The Rockets faced a similar situation in 2007 with Vassilis Spanoulis (who was tired of being buried on the bench by Jeff Van Gundy and just wanted to go back to Greece, where he could be "the man" again). Using this situation to his advantage in his first summer as GM, Daryl Morey swapped Spanoulis's voidable contract to the Spurs in a salary dump of Jackie Butler, picking up the draft rights to some guy named Luis Scola in the process.

--It is NOT worth it to the Rockets to void Royce's contract. At least not yet. Royce has far too much talent to void a contract that only counts about $1.45 million against the cap in a year when they're already well below the cap. They'd rather hope for the best with Royce, with the upside of the sides working things out and maximizing Royce's talents FAR outweighing the upside of the extra $1.45 million in cap room and a 15th roster spot.

FWIW, I sincerely hope that the two sides work something out. Dumping Royce now is not in either party's best interests.

Next years summer league and camp is do are die for Royce. If the Rockets don't pick up his option he is going to have a hell of a time sticking to a nba roster with all his bagage.
