umm...you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. I am no right winger, in fact, i'm a fiscal conservative/social libertarian and I've listened to Rush on occassion and while he does speak his mind the criticisms about him being a heartless "unintelligent" right-winger is so far off that it is obvious you are only regurgitating what you've heard in the media rather than actually listen to him on the radio. I'm not defending him--he is an adult--and can take on his own critics--but you look unintelligent making your point with this completely fallacious analogy of mental illness=right winger.

I felt compelled to respond not because I am a "rush baby" or want to defend him--but because of stupid comments by people who perpetuate a stereotype of conservatives as stupid, dumb, racist etc etc. In my experience most of them (I won't call YOU a name) don't have the slightest clue what they are talking about and to spit ad hominem remarks into a conversation on basketball and mental illness really pisses me off. We can have political disagreements but you need to take that trash outside and stick to what you know.

For the record, I am an economist by trade, have worked on numerous campaigns for both Dems and Reps, and own a few small businesses so I do know what I'm talking about.

Immaturity is not an illness, but if it were, it would be treatable with a heavy dose of reality.

An FYI. We have a forum for that topic. It's called D&D. Politics doesn't belong here. While Easy should have left it out of his post, at least he was using the reference in a basketball context. You didn't bother to do that.

I agree. I pointed out that his comments had no place in this forum. Not trying to perpetuate it. I said his comments had no place in a basketball context so I did bother with it.

Don't want to get in trouble with this post, so I'll add that the Lakers game is a wakeup call, Jones should play more, Harden should ISO less, and we should all pray for lin.

I wonder if the Royce has asked the team to allow him to say what he wants on twitter, without being fined. Wouldn't he argue that being unable to express himself is bad for his mental health?

I totally get what you're saying, but that's just one way of looking at it.

I think a better comparison would be that Royce is like PETA: He's raising awareness of an issue not by being sensible, but by doing things most people would see as counterproductive/idiotic/outrageous. Although in Royce's case, he's probably aware that he's using those tactics and actually thinks he's being sensible.

Nevertheless, he's publicly calling attention to something that has flown mostly under the radar, especially in the sports world. It seems like it would hurt his cause, and regarding professional athletes with such problems, it very well may end up making them afraid to disclose their issues. In the general population, though, the added publicity will likely end up being more beneficial to the cause.

As a PETA supporter, I disagree with this analogy.

Maybe we should just skip the analogies of the White situation to politically charged people and organizations? Don't think it is particularly instructive. :)

This isn't about politics at all. I'm a PETA supporter myself, financially as well as ideologically. I'm just saying that they use outrageous tactics to garner publicity -- methods that many non-supporters see as just downright stupid. Those people miss the bigger point, though: those tactics have indeed raised awareness of the issues. The Michael Vick thing wouldn't have been anywhere near as big a story without PETA having paved the way for a decade or more.

Royce White may be making a lot of noise and irritating many people, but make no mistake, the resulting publicity IS raising awareness.

Royce might be selfish and pouting about playing time. This would actually be preferable for the Rockets because it's easier to deal with. More likely, he's using things like "healthy work environment" and "my kids" as an excuse to not deal with a situation that's causing him stress right now. GAD and OCD are legitimate problems and not everyone deals with them the same way.

If either happen this year, as far as I'm concerned the season will have been a complete success.

I think Les is just hoping to keep fining him until he pays back the balance of his contract. I agree though that a scenario where this works out for the Rockets is looking less and less likely.

This has nothing to do with basketball, but since we are on the subject I will say that I've listened to both Rush and Fox on the regular. Both are moderated by intelligent people, yet at the same time they are completely disingenuous, often bordering on partisan propaganda. As far as your stereotype argument goes, the data actually shows that liberals are generally better educated than right-wingers. Don't get me wrong, there are many idiotic liberals and smart conservatives out there. However, conservative-voting states are generally the least-educated and better known for harboring more anti-minority populations. Again, not saying you as an individual are either of these things, yet it's clear that certain types of people tend to gravitate to one side of the aisle or the other.

Back to the analogy, both Rush and Royce bring attention (good and bad) to the cause they try to champion, yet ultimately don't do much to advance it. They're both self-absorbed and disingenuous attention-seekers.
