It's hard to tell with the Jags, since opponents are running all over them. So I can't really put much stock in that. But after thinking about it more, it's not like there are many feared defenses in the AFC anyway. Patriots are mediocre. Ravens are mediocre. Steelers have a good defense, but aging and now perhaps without Big Ben. Broncos we've shown to be able to score on them. So overall, I guess I am overthinking things.
Agreed. Jamarcus Russell could throw a 70-yard bomb, but is he still in the NFL? Cutler can throw a 65-yard bomb, but can he lead his team, like Schaub did today?
Watching Schaub pick apart the defense in the 5 wide 4th quarter sets was almost Brady-like. Hell, I think Schaub has the cerebral capacity to be just as effective and put up the crazy TD/yards that Brady does... its just that this team is well rounded enough, and has the scheme/RB in place, that it doesn't have to.
The only comparable difference between the two is Brady has a tad bit more arm strength, and the scheme his team runs means he's passing on far more plays than running (whereas the Texans run the ball more than they pass) I think Schaub can be just as accurate of a passer... and he usually makes the right decision on who to throw to. Those two things sound like pretty "simple" talents for a QB to have... but most QBs in the league do not have those. Brady is effective because he doesn't make mistakes, and he almost always throws it to the guy who's open. He can't run with the ball, he cant create something out of nothing, and he doesn't rely on the deep ball to beat teams. I'm not saying that Schaub = Brady... i'm just saying that he has the capability to put up HUGE Brady-like #'s week in/week out if that was what was being asked of him. Luckily, its not.
Well then of course he can put up huge numbers. He's already proven he can. I don't think he could be anywhere near as consistent as Brady, but then again, you could say that about literally everybody else. And a side note about arm strength: it's nor just about distance, it's about velocity too. Brady can fit balls into windows that Schaub just cant. The stronger your arm, the more weapons you have in your arsenal. Granted, I'd much rather my QB be accurate with a pistol than erratic with a rifle. *cough*Rivers*cough*
The beauty of the Texans scheme involves that Schaub shouldn't have to "fit balls into windows" as there should always be a high percentage option available. I agree with that you need velocity on a lot of throws to overcome mistakes... but then you also have throws like Henne made yesterday that was accurate, but waaaay too fast for Blackmon to handle. You need touch as well (which Schaub has a ton of... he was hitting Andre stride-for-stride on every ball except for the one in OT).
I think schaub should be front runner for MVP. As long as he can be in the top 7 or 8 in most important stat categories and if we end up with the best record, he should win.
Schaub made 80% of his throws in the 4th quarter. I am not a huge Schaub supporter myself, but u have to admit he is either getting better or he plays best under pressure, or both.
Schaub had 298 yards and 3 TDs in 4th and OT combined. and again he lead the team to kick the game-winning FG in regulation, but the kicker missed it, and a penalty denied the first kick.
