I've never posted here before under different name. I use to post on the ESPN forums a long time ago, but when I tried to go back there recently they changed the format and nobody posts there anymore.
http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/...s-phil-jackson-meets-los-angeles-lakers-brass When Phil Jackson met with Los Angeles Lakers executive vice president Jim Buss and general manager Mitch Kupchak on Saturday, he asked for travel restrictions, a salary in line with what he previously earned with the Lakers and significantly more say over basketball decisions, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. The travel restrictions would limit the number of road games Jackson would have to attend, a source told ESPN. WTF? That's ridiculous.
This is what the Lakers get for a hasty, knee-jerk decision without closing on a replacement first. I like the script so far. The more dysfunction the better.
I agree with Phil's ability to manage stars, I do feel other factors get glossed over in his favor. It's too bad about his health issues, I hate how the media uses that as an excuse for him not coaching teams that aren't favorites. Sometimes I feel he gets too much credit for controlling players. Dennis Rodman had numerous accolades before Phil coached him and Phil didn't control Rodman as much as people claim. The argument about Jordan not winning before Phil is valid. He won against deeper teams with one star and one guy who developed into a star. It's rarely mentioned how teams like the Pistons, Celtics, Lakers and 76ers were past their primes by then. More expansion teams came around that time. Del Harris had the Lakers winning before Kobe and Shaq. Kobe needed time to develop and they mainly lost in the playoffs to teams that made the finals. It's unfair how coaches who came after him were called failures when they had to work with rebuilding teams or teams that weren't at full strength. The Bulls during their second 3 peat and the Lakers had established players other than Kobe, Shaq and Jordan that didn't get enough credit. The Lakers benefited from more expansion teams and this being a time when players are trying to go to the same teams (years before Miami's big 3 formed). People bring up the Bulls possibly being cheated in the 1994 playoffs yet won't mention all the times Phil's teams benefited from lopsided officiating (98 ECF, 98 Finals, 2002 WCF, 2004 1st round, 2008 WCSF, 2008 WCF, 2010 Finals). That aside, I think he's a great coach and a smart man. I even have one of his books.
Phil is old, that's why the travel restrictions. It was a story the last year or so when he was coaching. I doubt that will be the deal-breaker. He'll be there when it comes to the playoffs. I think the deal-breaker may be more say on basketball decisions.
Phil is great at turning average players into quality players. Just look at what happened to guys he coached after they went to other teams. Pippen sucked when he left Phil, Odom sucked, Ariza sucked, Longley sucked, bj armstrong sucked without Phil too. The guy knows how to win and get the most out of his players. Only guy who may be better at that is Larry Brown, other than that Phil is in a league of his own. The fact that the Lakers would fire Brown this early in the season just to get Phil to coach home games says how much respect they have for him. No other coach in NBA history would get these kind of perks to coach a team.
Kobe realizes that he can't win without the triangle offense, and that he can't be the player coach that we wanted to be under Yes Man Brown. Kobe is the most spoiled and spoon fed athlete in NBA history, and yet people have this clown ahead of Hakeem on the all time great lists, dispicable.
Why do lakers fans like to say when Phil Jackson is coach again lakers automatically win the championship lol
Because they such a spoiled, bandwagon, entitled fanbase, they delusionel and think they gon win da title every year. Buncha douchebags
Anyone remember this? <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/YlkeKbStexE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I won't hold loving winning & prestige against him. Who doesn't? Or being in a position to choose only the jobs he wants. Doesn't mean he doesn't love coaching just because he only plays winning hands. Either way you have to admit it's been a pretty good strategy. I think he enjoys & excels at different aspects of coaching, maybe less traditionally valued, but no less important. At the nba level especially, management, balancing egos, pushing the right buttons, manipulating the media to your advantage instead of letting them destroy your team's cohesion. All part of modern pro coaching, right up there with x/o's & teaching, & he does seem to love all that. &egardless of what he loves or not, what he brings to the table is especially valuable now that it seems you have to have a superteam to win, with multiple stars, & how the media is now. No he's not larry brown, someone who is willing to take on the challenge of coaching a horrible team just out of pure love of teaching the game more than anything, but there's much more to coaching pros, PJ has it, & apparently the market agrees. I won't be able to root for this team, mostly because of D. Howard, but I can't hate on the zen meister for having gotten it done with too much talent.
Phil Jackson Head Coach + Mike D'Antoni Offensive Coordinator + Jeff Van Gundy Defensive Coordinator?
Is Eddie Jordan going to remain on the staff? I thought the whole point in bringing him in was to implement the Princeton offense.
I agree with your point, but you probably remember that this is nothing new to the Lakers, they were discussing these arrangements since as early as their last championship.
