This is a complete fallacy of induction. No one loves to lose and the last person is Daryl Morey--you can tell by how hard he tries to make an impact by trading for a star player. Its not his fault the trades don't go his way (Stern) or other GMs don't want to make a deal (Dwight), or spurn Houston for other cities (Carmelo, Bosh). It takes two to tango and no other GM would be able to land Houston a star without a willing partner on the other side. That fact does not change with a new GM. I don't get why people don't see that? Houston has been put in a difficult situation rebuilding after Yao and McGrady. We thought we had some pieces that could take us to the playoffs post Yao and once they hit their peak, we decided to go into a new direction and lo and behold we got a superstar in Harden--thanks in part to the accumulation of assets and picks. Morey has made it clear we need another star--no one is talkinng about being "content with losing." He is aggressively looking for a second star either via trades or free agency but they don't grow on trees and he also isn't going to just sign the first semi-star to a max deal and handcuff us from future deals?!! I don't understand why you don't get that. Also, his analytical approach has found gems at the end of the 1st round and 2nd rounds, you can't dispute that. He also has to report to an owner who doesn't want to tank! So how does replacing Morey with someone else change any of the above facts??? The new GM will still have to deal with an owner who won't tank, stars and other GMs who may or may not want to play for Houston or trade with Houston, and a new GM may not have the drafting ability of a Morey? So everyone calm down a bit. We still have to see what we have in our rookies and after this year we'll see if we can't attract some free agents. The knee-jerking has to stop. Morey is doing his best--without having the luxury of being an LA or NY GM where stars are begging to play for you. Doesn't take a genius to assemble a team that way either. End Rant
The definition on good or bad GM is not by how his wishes and effects are, but how is the results in his tenure. Bottom line, you get to win the ball games.
Agreed but you can't ignore the body of work and circumstances that have prevented Houston from obtaining a star. its not for lack of trying, its not for drafting terrible picks or making huge mistakes, its being dictated primarily by outside sources. All I'm saying is if a different GM comes in, how do all of these external factors not impact him the way the affected Morey? Plus Morey is now assembling his team so we have to see how that goes.
He is not a good GM and gets no respect from the star players. He made McHale's job impossible by letting him run a full training camp with one group lead by Lin and Kevin Martin and then traiding them and bringing Harden. Now everyone is blaming McHale when in fact it's Morey who messed it all up. Plus he overpayed at least 3 players! Desperate.
