Hmmm...well I dunno what to say to that. Sounds good. Aren't they building some big theatre off Lamar and Riverside? And I don't follow any of these arts at all, but I just googled Austin opera and I saw Bocelli is coming in Feb. http://events.austin360.com/austin-tx/events/opera FWIW Travis and Harris county have almost the exact same percentage of Asians and I think its like 33% Hispanic to Harris' 40% Hispanic. Also, there are tons of those ethnic restaurants you mentioned in Austin. Of course Houston will have more, but you are acting like they don't exist in Austin. You have to be overgeneralizing or just talking to idiots.
Houston is a concrete jungle, you will not find greenery here. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=193634
I can agree with that. I'd even go so far as to say Fort Worth is the vagina of Texas. I guess that makes Arlington the perineum... Spoiler
Yeah. It's stupefying. I can't speak to the new theater as I haven't heard anything about it. But, I've only been here for 6 months after starting a new job. As to Andrea Bocelli, well....he's a very talented pop singer, and he sings in an operatic style, but he's not an opera singer....he doesn't have the range or the pipes for opera. Admittedly, I've become more defensive about Houston since I moved to Austin, but Houston is one of the most diverse places you'll find anywhere. And it should be that way, considering the size of the place. I wish I could say I was. Most everyone I've met bases their opinion entirely on "Oh, I got stuck in traffic once in Houston!!" or "There's nothing to do!! I stayed with some family once in Sugarland/Katy/Missouri City/suburbia and I was bored!!" or "I was there once 20-30+ years ago and blah blah blah." Honestly, some days I wonder where the hell I am. It's 2 friggin' hours away and you would think it's on the other side of the planet or something from the way people talk about it. I'm not hating on Austin, I'm really not, but according to some folks here, Austin has San Diego weather, zero traffic, the most/best arts and entertainment, and has cornered the market on green foliage. So yeah, I find all of that just a bit irritating.
Inner Loop Houston has plenty of things to. Suburbs are suburbs, they're the same everywhere. If your dumbass chooses to live in the burbs, don't complain about them. They all get developed the exact same way. No city has greenspace, no major one anyhow. Houston isn't alone in this. You guys are comparing the worst parts of Houston, to the best parts of other towns. Our nightlife is a little lacking. Thats the only valid complaint I've heard, but there is lot more to a town than that. Please enlighten me on the things all of these other towns have that we don't.
Ive said it before but take any austin hipster and drop them off inside the loop and guarantee they couldn't tell the difference between Travis heights or soco from montrose or the village.... Other than houston having better restaurants
someone told me that all these different texas environments come together in austin, like the hill country, the south and the plains to form the allergy nightmare
Blasted through H-town today and saw outlet malls, strip malls, restaurants, hospitals, and a sign that said 'theater district'.
Update: I retract my statement that houston is a strip mall. Houston is a giant city, and it has a lot to offer. The core of this city is simply amazing, as are the people.
Discovery Green downtown is an awesome park. It's not as lush as say Boston Common but I love what the city has done there.
Are you talking about the good area of Houston or in general??? Have you been to gunspoint or Swat???
I'm headed to Houston next week to attend a Texans game. Got Suite Box tickets @ Reliant Stadium for free. Can't freaking wait!
It does have a lot to offer, and yes there are a lot of strip malls, etc and its not very appealing when you're driving north and south on 45...The roads are the worst I've ever seen/been on...somoene described them as being similar to Louisiana roads, which sux for the 4th largest city in America.
