McHale has been known to be a bad coach when it comes down the Xs and Os... (there was an article where Anthony Carter mentioned how bad he was as a coach) I do think he has good leadership skills and that is why he is the head coach. Kelvin Sampson controls the defense and Chris Finch runs the offense. You can see a lot of Euro League offense when the Rockets are in half court situations. He (Finch) probably gets that from when he coached the British National team
Mchale was hired cuz he is on board with whatever the hell the management wants to do. Adelman wanted FO out of his way.
McHale's biggest missteps so far: - substitution timing - 3rd/4th quarter of Portland game - he should have subbed out Harden/Lin much earlier in the 3rd to give them some rest. You could tell they were completely gassed in the 4th. - play-calling - that last possession should have been taken after a time-out; I can understand that he might want the players to try to work it out themselves but when the game is right there for the taking, it's hard to justify that. These are just generally things that inexperienced coaches are slammed on time and time again. Brooks for OKC was constantly criticized over this kinda stuff last year as was Doc Rivers back in the day. McHale's just in the process of learning.
Lol! LOF much? Here, look at the numbers, He was 267-172 when he arrived in New York but went 121-167 there. You call that success? Amare was there but guess who wasn't? Yeah Nash. Lin is good and maybe great someday but he is no Nash and like roxxy said we have no pnr big man.
Dantoni's system doesn't really require a Steve Nash type of player though. Lin is no Nash but he did have considerable success under Dantoni. I think a lot of people have this misconception that because Dantoni's system had its most success under Nash it requires a HOF PG. A lot of people use this misconception to discredit Mike Dantoni's coaching which I disagree with. But I think any player that has a High BBIQ & can run the pnr at a very high level would have success under Dantoni's system. But my point still stands you need a pnr big man for MDA's system to be at it's best. We saw that with Nash & Amare and then Lin & Tyson. Also, you don't need Mike Dantoni to run his system.
Couple questions, why is everyone so high on Finch? what makes him so special to get the "coach in waiting" rite of passage a la jason garrett for the cowgirls? I know he was a really good rio grande coach but that was D league, Im mystified by this, someone please enlighten me about this one
Since we're a young team, we need somebody who understands them yet is old school enough to keep the guys focused and playing hard. I wouldn't mind rolling the dice on Mario Elie since he fits the criteria above.
The triangle doesn't need Jordan either but it sure helps to have Kobe. My point is if winning and playoff success is what we want then it's simple his style won't work. Like you said when Dantoni had Nash he had his most success. There is a reason he's still unemployed and if his style was so easy to replicate and be successful without a Nash caliber PG why isn't any other team using it? While it's pretty to look at it's not condusive to winning in the long run.
That may or not be true, but I don't think there's a sample that indicates it one way or another. The NBA is so driven by single great players. When Nash was tearing it up for PHX they had the misfortune of playing at the same time that better players (Kobe, Duncan) were in their primes and were...better. New York was a disaster with bad pieces. There is no system that has proven it can win a title without great players or 5 really good starters instead. How many teams are winning titles with simple PnR offenses without a HOF?
why does every thread ended up with a fight about Lin? Can both sides just chill? Back to the tread - I''m not sure who is the best for this bunch of young players but right now I don't have much faith in McHale helping young players grow. He seemed pretty old-school about letting vets play and rookies earning their dues. I'm not sure that'll work in such a young team, when the leaders are 23/24.
JVG/SVG/Sloan are my top choices. If we can, D'antoni will do wonders for this team. Mchale is one of the least competent coach in this league, needs to go back to NCAA and watching his old videos as a player.
Both Sampson and McHale has done every possible way to destroy the team. The players have worked together really well to form a cohesive team passing balls around and play really exciting games. But these two idiots have manipulated them to lose seven straight games and eight out of nine games making all those unreasonable changes. Have you ever heard of a game plan on the road to outrun all your opponents? Players couldn't possible lose that many games by themselves. It is Sampson who has been destroying the team spirit. His coaching philosophy sucks. Games under his design is boring and not to mention entertaining. If you think a monotonous approach to play basketball by passing the ball to Harden to finish up is exciting, then I don't ever want to follow the rocket at all. Winning at all cost results in the longest losing streak this year. That's ironic. I bet none of the players, including James Harden is happy with the coaches decisions. It is a blown up right into their ugly face. That is ugly and boring basketball. What happens to the thrilling basketball that the rockets played the month before. These coaches over coach to the point of destroying the team spirit. There is no excuse. Fire Sampson. If necessary, fire McHale too. We want to see the type of basketball the month before and not the type of basketball they are playing now. Basketball is entertainment. It is not entertaining anymore!!!!
So many team runs a version of Mike Dantoni's system. Spurs run it. Knicks run it. Sixers are running it etc. You know that Mike Dantoni's system is what the Olympic team runs as well right, the system that wins Olympic gold medals? His system when run effectively is virtually unguardable, can't believe you just called it pretty to look at. LOL. There is a lot more to his system than being pretty, it is just plain effective.
Holy crap. Now people are complaining about the style of play? What do you guys want to see... Grind it out half court ball with Asik posting up every play? You think that would look much prettier?
