We dealt with Alicia a Cat 3 storm compact but intense -- clean up after that one was a nightmare.

they handled that horribly...they made people go ahead with their travel plans to attend the marathon and now they cancel....should have been cancelled on day 1.

I just got electricity back at the house yesterday gary, hope you and other CFers came out ok as well. It's amazing how tone deaf Bloomberg is at times. His stupid comment about people going to see broadway shows last year with 2 feet of freaking snow outside, diverting resources for a frigging marathon to run through a borough where half the people HAVE NO WATER. This guy is the epitome of the 1%, and I'm not even into that occupy wall st stuff.

Anyway, both my stores in Long Island took a shellacking financially. Lost a week of sales and supplies. Even had to take money from personal savings to make payroll because my workers have rent due and I didn't want to leave them high and dry. Can't even blame LIPA for the delay. I have never seen so many trees blown down in my life. And I lived through a few monsoon seasons in China.

i feel very fortunate. i live on relatively high ground so flooding was never gonna be the issue. a transformer blew in my hood but i did not lose power. business at the bar has been good as everyone is stranded and can't get to manhattan. kids out of achool all week. crazy. i haven't even thought about checking out some of the more damaged areas.

My brother lives in Guilford CT (right on the water) but his area fortunately was spared the worst. He got his power on last night.

The bad news? When the power came back on, the tank on his hot water heater burst and flooded his basement anyways.

All things considered though, he's doing well. His daughter is in Manhattan on the upper west side and never lost power or internet.

Update: CNN interviews the man that refused to open the door. He said that he could do nothing to help, that he wasn't a 1st responder. SMH.

The guy is lying. Damn, I have not been this pissed at another human being in a while. F**k him. There is zero reason you should ever turn away a mother and TWO FRIGGING toddlers in a hurricane. My goodness, this dick needs to burn.

As I said earlier the big issue with Sandy is the cold temperatures that are coming soon. Hurricanes on the Gulf have been stronger but you didn't have to worry about having heat afterwords.

Of course hurricanes on the gulf are not going to be as destructive as they would be in NE. It is because the gulf knows their hurricanes. Anything that couldn't handle a cat 3 has already been destroyed long ago.

The fact remains is that New England faces the risk of getting a hurricane just like any of the other coastal regions. Ignoring the risk doesn't make it a super storm.

Whether or not he's lying, why isn't the mother taking any heat for her poor discretion in driving on the road during a hurricane? That mother is responsible for the safety of her children, and she put her children into a dangerous environment.

Is he lying or is she lying? You don't know.
If her story is true, could he have helped them take shelter? Maybe.
If he did help them, could he have put himself in danger? Maybe.

The only truth in this situation is the mother should not have been on the road.

You're emotional and biased about this story. He's right from a legal POV. I wish he could've helped him, but we don't know enough to pass judgement. My gut tells me the mom made a mistake by being there in the first place.

With a few exceptions (special relationship, contract), a person has no duty to act to prevent harm to another, even if the other may lose their life without assistance. This may be morally reprehensible, and sometimes the jurisdiction may pass Samaritan laws to penalize people from not helping (I'm sure you'd like these).
