I think you have forgotten last years early winter storm that left the NE w/out power for a couple weeks. Hurricane season carries on till the end of November. People are bored of all the politics and weve had a very quiet hurricane season over the last couple years. There is nothing really extra ordinary about this storm. Sure, it can cause plenty of havoc and damage, but I wouldn't call this the storm of the century.
Hooray, a second day off. Honestly, all I'm really concerned about now is losing power/Internet - and a guy who's lived in my house longer than me says that this house is pretty good about it. And even then, I have enough books and stuff to keep me occupied. That, and I have no alcohol. That's kind of annoying.

Those early winter storms didn't have the same size storm surges and winds of Sandy. I would agree that it isn't the storm of the century since the century is still early but this is an unusual storm and not just hype.
Having lived in Boston I've been through Nor'Easters as noted Sandy is packing greater storm surges and affecting a lot wider area than most Nor'Easters. Also while 100 degree temps are bad and humidity are bad for most people in decent shape it won't kill you. Freezing temperatures will. Also just making a fire isn't that simple. Many modern houses don't have fireplaces or wood stoves plus those don't heat the whole house. I don't think many of you who have lived all your life in a hot climate understand what it is like in a cold climate. I've been without AC for days in a tropical climate and going without heat in sub freezing temperatures is worse. Add on top of that when you are buried in from snow and it becomes deadly.
It is already snowing in the Appalachians from the outer bands of Sandy. Anyway at the moment we don't know how bad this might be but there is a strong possibility of major winter weather in the mountains and inland areas.
This is a bad storm. We're a hundred+ miles from the center and the winds are quite strong. We still have power but con ed is shutting down the grid in lower manhattan. Parts of brooklyn are flooding. Parts of manhattan are flooding. The water is going up near me - if it goes up 2 more feet I am leaving because the power will be shut down automatically to save the substation. This is a bad storm because it is so big. It's affecting such a large swath - and even though the eye has passed the wind has actually picked up. But the worst part is the surge as the storm is not letting the tides go out and it has been building for days. water has no wear to go coming in via the long island sound and new york harbour. Hopefully the winds will deminish soon and let the tides out.
Per CNN @cnnbrk: Water levels in the Battery in Manhattan have gone 1 foot higher than the previous record set in 1960. #Sandy http://t.co/XEYNBgW0
