so i moved to HK with my wife a few months ago. i am having a hard time adjusting to the life style here. don't have any family or friends here and work for my old company from home remotely. all the sudden, i started to feel this boredom. not really interested in doing the stuff that i liked to do before. basically not happy and feeling down a lot lately. any idea what i should do? originally from upper midwest and this heat is really getting to me. can't believe i wishing for cold weather these days. not sure if it's boredom or depression lol. i suppose there is always going to be a big adjustment moving this far. just hoping for some ideas from other expats that made big moves like this before.

Sounds like adehedonia, a symptom of depression.

    Do you exercise?

If you are in HK, you can always pop over the border to see Shenzhen. There's always LKF to meet some new people, there's a whole community of foreign expats in HK, just gotta reach out and meet them.

There are millions of things to do in Hong Kong. Sounds like you are just stuck inside and not actually out there doing things and exploring? HK is also a very safe city. Just jump in a taxi and go to all the amazing restaurants, sights, massage parlors, I could go on and on here. Take an overnight train to beijing and check out the great wall, go to Shanghai to the Bund area and explore there for a weekend.

Are you scared there to go out? Do you feel unsafe? Embrace the new culture. Midwest? lol come on man.

I don't know if it will work for you or not, but I had a similar thing happen to me when I went off to college and my friends were all at a different college.

It took time, but it eventually worked. I started reading tons of new novels. Because I wasn't doing anything else and bored, I had a lot of free time, and read a lot. From those books, I got inspired to do all sorts of different things. I also ended up meeting people who were reading or had read the same books. If you read something that deals with expats it might help you especially if they are in HK. Just seeing where characters from the book hang out is a step. It will get you out of your apartment.

Get an issue of Time Out Hong Kong. Check message boards for expats living there. If you don't feel up to doing anything, just read, and if you're like me, it will eventually inspire you to want to make things happen.

Any change causes stress. Either way you will adjust fast or slow.

Join a basketball league or something. Find a hobby that interests you. Get out on the town and stuff. Find a dance class with your wife or something. Get yourself out of the funk!

yeah, i am doing a lot of things y'all mentioned. joined a basketball league that plays about twice a week. been going around exploring with the wife occasionally. doing a lot of exercise. i suppose it'll take a while for me to adjust. even though i am chinese american, but the culture is still very different from hk.

probably because i work from home and it's not much of a challenge. really have a lot of free time on hand. thinking about getting an actual office job so i can work with others and feel good about achiving something rather than staying at home and rot most of the time lol.

How the heck are you bored in Hong Kong? lol.

Get out and explore. It's not like you're trapped in some podunk town.
