Grain alcohol! What the **** is that. That's nasty. What is this thread. Feels goodman. Beenawhileguys.
Man getting older is a curse i swear. Everyday its something new, past year lost a friend and on monday lost a very close childhood friend... More disappoint than expected achievements
stevo, loss sucks. i've dealt with more than my fair share. it'll be alright. in other news, i am not drunk
I have a question, and I figure I might as well ask it in this thread. In my early 20s, I was in a karaoke bar, pounding down shots of Crown Royal. I was a regular at this place, and one of the older waitresses (perhaps in her sixties) looks at me with a very concerned look. She said something to the effect of, "You really shouldn't take shots like that. It's really bad for you..." She never stated the reason why it was bad for my health, but I'm pretty sure she was more so referring to the way we were consuming the liquor and not so much about the amount. Flash forward 10 years, I'm in the office talking about non-work topics. The subject turns to drinking at bars, and more specifically about taking shots. I make a brief comment in passing, "Yeah, that's really bad for your health..." A coworker looks at me with raised eyebrows and says, "it's no more worse for you than drinking mixed drinks". With the sage-like words of the karaoke bar waitress still etched in my mind, I retort with what I believed to be scientific fact, that drinking alcohol neat adversely affects the liver or stomach in some way. I always figured it was akin to not taking Advil on an empty stomach. But doubt starts to creep in, and so I do what any sane man would do in this situation. I google it. Many of the hits deal with common misconceptions and myths about alcohol consumption (beer before liquor makes you sicker, carbonated drinks speed up alcohol absorption, etc.) But I still can't seem to find definitive proof that taking shots of alcohol is worse for your body than diluting it with something or consuming it as a mixed drink. A few years ago, I received news that the karaoke lady was suffering from a brain tumor. Her condition quickly worsened after I moved cities. She passed away in 2008. Perhaps in my drunken stupor, I misunderstood what she said that night. After 10 years of vehemently avoiding shots at bars, I would like to put this question to rest. So I ask you, people of the "I'm drunk" thread. Whether I am proven right or wrong, I will have a drink tonight in her honor. I look forward to hearing your replies.
Maybe she was referring to drinking Crown Royal. Bleh. I guess it's easier to get alcohol poisoning by drinking it straight since it's a faster way to consume, but I don't think drinking a shot of alcohol vs. consuming the same amount in a mixed drink is any worse for you.
Thank you for the reply dharocks. In retrospect, Crown Royal is bleh indeed. That seems to be the general consensus, that a shot of alcohol is the same as the same amount in a mixed drink. But I have to believe that having nothing to dilute the liquor would have some harmful effects on the esophagus, stomach, intestine... something.
It's really bad for you to take shots if you have acid reflux or heartburn problems since it irritates the esophagus. I try to avoid 80 proof shots for that reason.
In light of our recent heated arguments over guns, I propose we come together to affirm that Andre Johnson is the ****ing man.
Was talking with some ladies at Sherlocks last night, everything was going smooth then I spilled an entire beer on my lap. Things went downhill from there.
