Ironic that in a thread about a teen who is the victim of cyberbullying, we have jokes made about her suicide.

I think this is tragic the way it unfolded and not to take away from it but when did "bullying" become a problem? Not that i mean it isnt a problem but its like its almost a fad now or something.

I swear the world nowadays is turning into a great big p**** waiting to get scarfaced.

Bullying has always been the same IMO. The methods by which it is done may have changed, but everything else is the same. It's just that victims now respond differently. Perhaps Revenge of the Nerds are to blame for that

Parents really need to be punished...there is no reason for a teen not to develop normal and healthy relationships with real and living people...instead..most kids now see solace from webcams and vlogs...Now with computers, ipads, phones, etc...all having easy access to webcams...vouyerism and "sextortion" is becoming a more rampant problem...and authorities are having an extremely hard time catching these men...

Dateline and Chris Hansen only scratches the surface of this problem...there are so many pedos...and sickos out there...good God...i wanna throw up..:(

Or maybe you just didn't hear about the suicides back in the day. Less news channel, less internet. Parents didn't want to look bad so they maybe didn't want to come forward with the story. Now with the internet the girl publishes her suicide note the internet so everyone can view.

I know bullying has always been an issue, i just didnt know that there was such an extreme gap between being physically bullied and online bullied, im 30 so growing up you know you get bullied, you just grow some nuts and swing, you either get your ass whooped or you whoop some ass, either way most of the time the **** stopped. That being said, ive never been cyberbullied so i cant put myself in those shoes, i can say that i would probly just be like FML but it wouldnt weigh on me anymore than being physically bullied, i dont think.

Im not trying to downplay any form of bullying, it just seems to have become such a hot issue like the past year.

Well, she made her bed, so she must lie in it. The bullying was terrible, don't get me wrong, but it could have been prevented had she not given into a pervert and an ******* who was looking to have his cake and eat it too.

hmm that's possible too. I don't remember that many emo kids when I was in high school though. This current batch of teens seem to get depressed a lot easier. maybe the decade of overmedicating kids is catching up to us.

yeah I hear yah, I went to middle school in an all black neighborhood so people tried to pick on me at first. Some of those guys carried knives on them so I didn't want to get into a physical confrontation. I let a couple of the bigger guys in my class copy off me during tests and the bullying stopped right away.

This was an adult taking advantage of a child. Not her fault. Its not out of the question that a child threatened by an adult made a wrong choice. She shouldnt have to pay for that choice with her life. His activities are illegal for a reason.

The difference between bullying now and bullying "then" (heck even when I was in school which wasn't that long ago) is the technology. When I was a kid if a couple of people had a problem with me and harassed me it was just them. Maybe they told their friends and maybe some of them would participate every now and then but it never reached ridiculous levels.

Now with facebook, twitter, cell phones, etc. kids can take their stupidity to insane levels. Your business can get spread so quickly it isn't even funny. Do you recall movies that used to use creative methods for a kid to get embarrassed in front of the whole school? Finding a way to get them at a pep rally, hijacking the principals intercom, etc. Now you can just go on facebook or twitter and spread that nonsense.

I don't think kids are any meaner they just have much more effective tools at their disposal.

Maybe the blackmail is not her fault, but she is at least partially (if not mostly) to blame for the rest. She was chatting with strangers unsupervised online, when she could have logged off at any time. Nobody FORCED her to do that. She posted nudes of herself online. Nobody FORCED her to do that. And she slept with another person's boyfriend. Nobody FORCED her to do that. She was playing fast and loose with her morals, and it bit her in the ass. Does that mean she deserved to die? Absolutely not! But she was in a situation largely of her own making, and I think that's why the outrage in this incident is tempered with a bit of contempt. Blaming others for our own mistakes is one of the biggest problems I see facing youth today.

Kids are spending more time being influenced by other kids, because of the influx of social-networking technology, rather than adults. Perhaps that amplifies their "meanness".

Yeah, it's kinda similar to presidents. My mother in-law made a comment the other day about how these two guys are no Reagan or JFK. My response was, could you imagine the presidencies of those two men today with the internet?
