I would argue that it's somewhat logical that religion plays a more central role when there is less material wealth - people need something to cling to. That doesn't mean that "more religious = more stupid".

after looking at the countries defining the trend, the takeaway from this graph is that Africans have very low IQs and are religious. Not sure you can define the trend by that alone

Most of you would call me religious.... but if asked that question as it was phrased, I'd say not important at all. As I define religion, I dislike religion. I think it would be better to get to the heart of it and ask how important is God to you on a daily basis or something along those lines...the word, "religion" has way too much baggage.

yeah, religiosity is so freighted with baggage it is a useless concept. the cliché about being spiritual yet hating organized religion is equally worthless. i'll even go futher and say that agnosticism and atheism hold no value either. why do we use labels, especially ones based on texts written by other people, to define ourselves? if i had to describe myself with one word, i guess i'd call myself a seeker.

Everything is happening like its supposed to? But you can't tell us the next big thing until it happens right? Religion is a way to cope with misery, its also a tool for manipulation. 'I lost my job, must be God has a plan'. 'I got a new job, God is so good.' If its a positive event, God is the best, if something bad happens, its because God has other plans. Instead of using logic and rationalization, religious people turn whatever happens into an easy way to cope with whatever is happening. Nothing wrong with that if that's your thing.

I think you missed my point. These studies may have been interchangeable "back in the day" but that has not been the case for quite a while. I make no claim that science has it all figured out, but at least the scientific method is based on observable and repeatable testing, unlike philosophy. And by the way, Einstein didn't come along and blow up Newton's work. He showed that the majority of Newton's theories were valid only in that "tiny" slice of experience in which nearly the entire universe exists (e.g., not traveling close to the speed of light and not in the presence of ridiculous concentrations of mass).
