Wait if someone believed in a religion and called their deity "sky wizard" you would find that funny? You arrogant b*stard!

Apologies to you if you were offended Jocar, but you have to understand that some of us get offended also when religious people try to force things on us based on their concept of god.

I am personally not an athiest, but agnostic. I think it is silly for someone to claim they are the ones who got it right, as to what exists, they understand what it wants, what it hates, what it loves, and then try to force public policy on that.

Religion has become not a guide for life but instead a tool for people to manipulate other people or justify questionable actions. I think it is full of hypocracy and merely self serving.

For instance, in Catholocism, it is stated that Jesus codemns the rich and the gays. Why is there mass outrage at Gay marriage, but being rich is totally okay?

Religion should be private, contained within someone's own thoughts.

proselytizing is part of some religions. we need to have respect for one another. i have no problem listening to the jehovan little old black ladies that prowl my neighborhood. they are always dressed in their finest. i never want to patronize but kindly counter their entreaties with a difference of opinion. i like them, i wish them a good day and i think we've all gained something from the encounter. trying to sell me eternal life isn't such a horrible thing because of the intent behind it. OTOH, try to sell me something else i don't want and you'll regret it. better if you get the hint quickly.

Near hunter-gatherers or subsistence farmers speaking non-written languages, no complex architectural or commercial activities that would require complex math, obviously not r****ded but living a dated social and anthropological model. I would expect this more in Mozambique, though.

I think you lack an understanding of how science works. What testable, falsifiable predictions have come from any of these theoretical "proofs"?

That's how a scientific proof works. You develop a theoretical framework to explain observed phenomena, then extrapolate to new, falsifiable predictions (unless you're a string theorist, then you don't worry about reality).

SRSLY? it is you who failed to understand my point. science is an extension of philosophy. they both seek knowledge and build upon collected data. these studies were interchangeable back in the day. science is now more specifically defined as using the scientific method to prove predictabilty. old astronomer/philosophers predicted the movement of planets. we "know" better now as newer proofs are more logical, generally via occam's razor, better gear and the whole standing on the shoulder's of giants thing. but as newton advanced a more modern version of science, with rules that were proven "true," einstein came along and blew up a lot of his shyt. i lump theology and philosophy together. science can predict the physical phenomena of the universe but they are no closer to knowing what any of it means than theolgians/philosphers. none of us know anything. we are tiny parasites in the grand sheme of things. if you believe that science has it all figured out, you are wrong.

"Where do we come from? How did the universe begin? Why is the universe the way it is? How will it end?

"All my life, I have been fascinated by the big questions that face us, and have tried to find scientific answers to them. If, like me, you have looked at the stars, and tried to make sense of what you see, you too have started to wonder what makes the universe exist.* The questions are clear, and deceptively simple. But the answers have always seemed well beyond our reach. Until now.

"The ideas which had grown over two thousand years of observation have had to be radically revised.* In less than a hundred years, we have found a new way to think of ourselves.* From sitting at the center of the universe, we now find ourselves orbiting an average-sized sun, which is just one of millions of stars in our own Milky Way galaxy. And our galaxy itself is just one of billions of galaxies, in a universe that is infinite and expanding. But this is far from the end of a long history of inquiry.* Huge questions remain to be answered, before we can hope to have a complete picture of the universe we live in.

"I want you to share my excitement at the discoveries, past and present, which have revolutionized the way we think. From the Big Bang to black holes, from dark matter to a possible Big Crunch, our image of the universe today is full of strange sounding ideas, and remarkable truths. The story of how we arrived at this picture is the story of learning to understand what we see."

There are a lot of things that are beyond our comprehension except we don't invent myths to explain those things. Myths aren't science. People inventing a mythical being and trying to tie that to all aspects of society is offensive to me.

exactly. dr. hawking is a theoretical physicist. philosophy and science, ultimately, are inseperable. st_fran_rules would have us believe that stephan lacks an understanding of how science works.

I thought that ANY IQ test would have to test some amount of knowledge, right? And in terms of religious debates, knowledge has to factor into the equation. Otherwise, no matter how smart a person is, if he lacks knowledge, I can convince him I have super powers by starting a fire with my lighter. It doesn't make the other person stupid, but certainly more susceptible to religion, any, religion.

I just want to note that religious DOES NOT EQUAL belief in organized religion.

One can be religious, spiritual, and not believe that Jesus walked on water, God, created Earth in 6 days, made man in his own image, and spend his time actually giving a damn about whether or not human beings show their obedience and worship of him.

I have a higher than average IQ and I am 100% convinced that there is one true God and that he sent his Son here to die for our sins so that anyone who believes in him SHALL not die rather have everlasting life. I have ABSOLUTELY no doubts about this. If anyone studies Bible prophecy they would know that everything is happening just as planned.

Bible prophecy wasn't discussed in any of my science courses. Then again, neither was Hansel and Gretel or Nostradamus. Why do you think that might be?
