[Chron] For a frustrated Lin, waiting is hardest part

Lin's work ethic and drive is why I'm not concerned at all about his performance during the preseason

For two days, Jeremy Lin had to let his frustration marinate in the mix that is his unique place as an NBA celebrity beginning the next phase of his career.

He had struggled badly against the Spurs on Sunday, making just the last of his 10 shots, which drew unusual levels of attention if only because he was the guy going 1-for-10. That morning, an unnamed source had charged in a New York newspaper that Rockets coaches were unhappy with him over a lack of effort to improve, which they considered so inaccurate they said the issue was that he has worked too hard and they wanted him to back off.

Lin did not deny his poor play or disguise his disappointment, but he also knew there would be nothing he could do about it until Wednesday night’s game against Memphis, with the Rockets having already determined he would have to sit out Monday’s game against the Mavericks.

“It’s frustrating,” Lin said. “Any time you don’t play as well as you think you’re capable of, it’s frustrating. I have to remember it’s a process. It’s not just going to happen overnight for me. I’m going to have to build and build step by step, brick by brick. As long as I get an upward progression of improvement over time, I think I’m happy.”

As much as he can have that perspective and put it in a Harvard-y sort of way, Lin could not blame his critics, since he has been among his harshest. Through three preseason games, he has averaged 5.3 points (on 21.1 percent shooting) and 4.7 assists in 22.7 minutes.

Lin said he would not have been able to live with his play Sunday had it been a regular-season game, so coach Kevin McHale, knowing Lin would have to live with it for a few days, met with him on Sunday evening and again Monday morning in Dallas.

“He’s just getting his confidence back, trying to get his mojo going, which is very common,” McHale said. “I said, ‘Just go out and relax and play. It’s going to come.’ Anybody who has ever played and come back has gone through a period (when) it’s kind of odd. All of a sudden, things click, and he’s back to playing well and confident.”

Some of Lin’s difficulties have stemmed from the growing pains of the Rockets’ offense. Yes, he has missed some open shots, but many of his scoring chances have come when the movement around him bogged down and he had to charge into the lane to create his own offense.

The Rockets consider his shooting percentage among the least of their issues. Even less of a concern is what he will do about it.

“I know everybody on our coaching staff has nothing but complete faith in Jeremy,” assistant coach Kelvin Sampson said. “We watch him practice every day. If anything, you have to pull him back. He works as hard as anybody on this team.

“Jeremy and the guy he works with on shooting (Josh Fan) come in at night, and we’ve talked about as a staff monitoring how much he does so he doesn’t overdo it. I’ve never heard anything about him not working hard enough. If anything, he works too hard.”

Lin has continued to report there are no issues from last spring’s surgery to repair a torn meniscus or the time lost to his rehab, other than the wait to regain his quickness. Monday’s day off was part of the team’s plan for him this month rather than a result of any setback.

The difficulty was in having to wait to try to bounce back, inspiring those around Lin to remind him there is no rush, no matter how much scrutiny comes his way.

“He should feel no pressure,” Chandler Parsons said. “There shouldn’t be any burden on his shoulders to lead or to go out there and score 20 points. Just go out there and play the way you know how to play, and good things will happen.”

Lol New York paper ..... anything will do to dampen the Rockets spirit.

Not what every fans think. The question tense to pop up based on two preseason games is a question mark on Jeremy Lin ability and skill.

I like to see play a combo guard role. Little like Westbrook does for the OKC. Sure he dosent have the physical or thge scoring prowess if RW, but his game is flowing when he is aggressive and looking to be free flowing. Some players are born natural born scorers whom when they get aggressive, everything else like playmaking come naturally after that. Westbrook and Tony Parker ciome to mind. Lin is not a pass first aPG, he is at his best when he attacks the defense first and looks to pass second.

if he struggling against preseason second units then he is gonna get murdered against the real starting lineups.

"its preseason" is a blatant excuse, lins not hitting his shots because its preseason, lin not making smart decisions with ball because its preseason blah blah blah

That is nonsense. You can't use the Lin has a small sample size therefore nobody knows what he is & then use an even smaller sample size of pre-season games.

I thought this article was gonna be about Lin's sexual frustration. I'm disappointed.

Rajon Rondo's box score for tonight's game against the Nets (Keep in mind Deron Williams sat out the game as well)

35min/ 2-7fg/5pts/6 to/11 ast in a losing effort in pre-season... So by your logic, he gone get murdered come real season???

I'm intrigued by the Celtics. They were the Nets bench for the entire game and the "big 3" all played over 30 min in the game. Maybe they're just not trying hard enough.

Is there any point in using Rajon Rondo as an example? We know Rajon is a damn good player. Honestly, I know JLin is a solid player, he'll have a steady career in this league, but I think he is feeling the pressure of the contract he was given. In my mind, Morey gave him that contract based on potential (with the obvious, Linsanity small sample size), and JLin desperately wants to live up to it.

He really needs to relax and just let the game to come to him. I'm sure he will be okay, but unfortunately with the contract he was given, there will always be a magnifying glass over him.

Most good or even great players struggle even in during regular season. Every players struggle. If their struggle does not affect the team from winning, then let the players sort thing out, the best time for that is preseason. Preseason, who care....it is just my opinion. You don't have to accept it.

You'd think Lin would be getting plenty of tail.

He started Linsanity a day before he was gonna get cut and played out of his mind on the biggest stage in basketball for a solid 10 games or so. I'm sure he can handle pressure. I just think his knee is really bothering him, which is really worrisome.

Given his dedication, work ethics, quickness, and Harvard smarts, I had no doubt that he will our franchise player for years to come.

That is, if his body holds up. My only concern is his knee. A young man with arthritis is kind of scary.

I honestly think it's playing with his mind a little. With Linsanity, he rose to the occasion out of nowhere and there were not really any expectations. If anything, people thought the magic was going to be gone as soon as Melo came back healthy and then when he wasn't playing Linsanity well, Melo was blamed.

Here in Houston, he was handed a huge contract because the Rockets believe that Lin can produce Linsanity again. Lin obviously worked very hard this summer knowing he was going to be the general of this team. There is no longer anyone else to deflect the blame on, therefore people will expect results from him. Some fans, like myself, understand that this is a process and that perhaps he will not amount to much more than an average point guard, while other crazy lunatics, such as some found on this board, believe he is going to go God mode any second now.

There are unrealistic expectations (if you ask me) that are being placed on this kid and he wants to meet those expectations. He probably has it in the back of his head that he is no longer being paid to be a spark plug, but rather he is getting paid to a be huge contributor to this team, possibly be the leader, and that might take some adjusting too. His heart is in the right place, but thankfully the Rockets are slowing him down so he doesn't wear himself out and injure himself.

    He will be fine

    From http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/8...melo-anthony-master-getting-way-espn-magazine

"D'Antoni's conflict-averse style allowed the situation to fester. Teammates prodded Anthony to give more effort in practice. "Jeremy is a tough guy," says a source close to the team. "He told Carmelo under no uncertain terms, 'I'm not going to give you the ball unless you create space and run the plays.' None of the other guys had a problem with it. Tyson [Chandler] didn't, Amar'e didn't. They knew they had a better chance with the ball in Lin's hands in the last few minutes."":
