Great post, but I was questioning why would it matter 43 MLB v. 34 ILB when this guy said losing a 34 ILB isn't that important. It's not interchangeable parts when you look at what Cushing was responsible for which you've outlined fantastically.

you could play more dime than nickel and move up manning or quin in that role. you lose against the run but 3rd and long a run/draw is not as likely. but it could help against those 2 TEs sets if they run routes.

bottom line, they will have to adjust and get creative to make up for the loss but it's not impossible.

I'm aware. But in this statement:
I'm not talking about Cushing in our 3-4/5-2. I'm talking about the difference between losing a MLB (Mike) vs losing our do-everything ILB in Wade's 3-4/5-2 system.

    Gotcha

And I agree. Everyone started the year frightened of losing one of Schaub-AJ-Foster...and I was already petrified of losing Cushing, given how subpar the other ILBs are/were. Huge drop off.

I think one big trick is, we've already lost a sizable advantage against the run with this injury. On third and long, I agree, but we've got to adjust for both issues.

On my jog at lunch, I was indulging in a game of Play DC. Assuming they don't swing a Win Now move (flipping a draft pick for the Niners' Gooden), I was thinking one possibility would be to go to a 4-3 lineup a little more often by moving Watt inside and letting Mercilus come in at right end. Reed and Barwin can help against the run, but they wouldn't work well as ILBs. Moving Watt around makes it tougher on teams to pick on a weak area with the run and take pressure off Cody/Mitchell up the middle. You have to commit your center to double on Watt when he's looming near your A gap.

Closing speed...I would mind having a guy like Reed hovering around the ILB position...and let Mercilus get more reps outside...I just dont know if Reed is quick enough but I would gamble using a better player than Brady James...he is really slow..

Reed won't have the ability to read and diagnose an offense like Cushing and James. It's not even really about his physical ability at that point.
