I believe today is the last day to register. I believe I am registered in Austin, but I live in Houston. Do I need to go to the Tax office to register or can I still mail an application?

Not to hijack your thread, but in NJ you mail in your application and our deadline is next Tuesday. I put mine in the mailbox late night last wednesday, and they say it takes 3 days to process. If I don't receive a phone call by tomorrow night, should I re-send it?

Before proceeding, verify that your new address is in the same county in which you are currently registered at Texas Legislature Online.

If your new address is in a different county, you must re-register in your new county by completing a voter registration application. Mail your completed application to your local County Voter Registrar.

You will receive a new Voter Certificate in the mail within 30 days of submitting a change through this service. If you submit changes less than 30 days prior to an election, you must vote at your current polling location.

Seems like that second sentence answers your question.

States need to institute same day voter registration or abolish it entirely. Over in Minnesota, they have same day voter registration and it works wonderfully. And across the border, in North Dakota they dont even have voter registration and they have no fault absentee voting (anyone can vote by mail).

Not to turn this political, but why is same day registration needed? It's not like an election sneaks up on anyone.

I've been in Minnesota 20+ years. I registered when I first moved here and then didn't have to register for another 14+ years when my address changed.

Because it increases turnout pretty dramatically. Registration is a headache and people forget to do it. The states with the highest turnout tend to have the most easy paths to voting.

Both of us are probably engaged enough politically to ensure that we're registered but that's not the case for a majority of Americans. There's a reason why Minnesota leads the nation in turnout almost every election cycle.

If registration were that easy, you'd see a lot more registered voters. The fact is that its actually a pretty big hurdle for a lot of people.

Not having voter registration like North Dakota is probably a bit too radical (despite not having any real cases of fraud there) but same day registration is a fair compromise.

Put it this way, what's the downside to same day registration. Why create unnecessary hurdles to voting?

I emailed them and they said as long as the registration is postmarked by today, the registration is good. There were actually three or four people at the post office doing the same thing.
