Under new owner Josh Harris, the Sixers are going to be leaning more on statistical analysis to break down their team's performances and opponents' tendencies. But cautions one Philly insider, "We're not going to be like the Rockets," noting that Houston GM Daryl Morey, one of the NBA's leading proponents of "analytics," must have been blinded by statistics to have given Jeremy Lin $25 million. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/b...-better-target-stars-article-1.1176716?pgno=1
I don't get what that even means. And is this the same NY media that wrote that BS story about Machado not being impressed by Lin.
I think he means that the stats do justify the contract, but Morey shouldn't trust those statistics because that insider would have never given Lin the contract he got. Its just the NY media using any excuse to take a shot at the Rockets\Lin.
Anything by Mitch Lawrence or Frank Isola of the NY Daily News you kind of have to take with a big handful of salt. The NY Daily News is basically a gossip rag. In any case, that Sixers insider might just still be smarting from when Jeremy was last in Philly: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/c6yCXVBLhsM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6yCXVBLhsM
Basketball is a money making business. Lin will bring in much more revenue than Lowry or Dragic. And it's also not like he's an awful player.
Philly fans probably realize that Moneyball, as the Rockets practice it, actually is code for MediocreBall. IMO, Sixer fans want to win a championship rather than cheer for a team that makes money by winning slightly more games than it loses.
It means he's downplaying the role money (business) played in Morey's decision, so he can imply Morey is all analytics, and then use that to say he won't be that crazy over it, since many fans now think analytics are bad because the rockets "failed" and now "suck'..
The source was cited as "one Philly insider." Unnamed and uncheckable source. Which gives the journalist free license to emphasize whatever angle he wants.
The NY media situation is exacerbated by the fact that Dolan keeps tight controls on management and employees talking to journalists. To fill that vacuum, journalists have to find angles to write stories and fill columns. It seems like a tough job to work.
Or maybe it could be because we lost two super stars to injury with nothing in return. Hmmm maybe that has something to do with it.
One steal, one layup and getting rejected by old man brand? Probably not the best video to get your point across.
