In the movie they leave Suzie's child alive... her being on that list of three kids seems a mighty big coincidence and she would already have a reason to hate loopers ... aka using her mother like a prostitute or even killing her. There are a number of things that could make this happen. So I'm going with that theory...
http://www.the-back-row.com/index.php/2012/10/06/tbr-exclusive-gill-s-looper-theory a link to the theory explained out
If Cid wasn't the rainmaker then the numbers given to old Joe really have no significance. It had to be Cid. At first I thought maybe it was Abe.
The numbers made sense for Suzie's daughter because there were three children who matched the birthday and hospital code... the red head who is killed, Cid and Suzie's kid... which Suzie's kid being one them is a HUGE coincidence if it's not connected. Someone who is so deeply connected to the Looper crime syndicate in all likely hood grew up into it and had a much easier chance becoming connected to them than a strange boy. Otherwise, what on earth is the point of Suzie existing in the story? Why one earth would she have a daughter who shows up in this manner? It serves no purpose and wastes time, unless of course it's rainmaker! It's Chekhov's gun....
It's just a coincidence. Because old Joe has to spend so much time thinking about whether he can kill the kid or not, he is ultimately captured. I saw it as nothing more than a plot device. Also, the director openly discusses the film implying that Cid is the rainmaker
saw it last night. it never crossed my mind that anyone other than Cid is the rainmaker. i mean, Cid literally kills people with his death stare. as he ages he learns to control his power. it's why no one in the future can explain the murders. edit: after reading that link dachuda, i can accept that interpretation too. the Rainmaker has to exist one way or another (akin to the inevitability of Judgment Day in Terminator series). Joe's self-sacrifice to save Cid can be seen as meaningless.
Anyone else feel like the movie was written by two different people? The 1st half and 2nd half don't really line up. I have a theory that the original script focused on Willis and not the kid, since they seem to set Willis up as the protagonist before making him look like a jackass.
Disagree. The TRAILERS made Bruce Willis a protagonist. But really he was always a selfish, murdering, crazy-ass thug. I agree that the second half took the film in a different direction, but it's one that nobody should be surprised to see, since they allude to TK and the Rainmaker throughout. As for Cid, it was always him and it has to be him. This isn't Judgement Day where humans would eventually and inevitably create the technology that leads to Skynet. Cid's life was essential to what he would become. I think in the older Joe's life, Cid becomes the Rainmaker out of a desire for power and control. Remember he told the younger Joe he couldn't stop his mother from being killed. So I think he grows up never realizing Sara is his mother and always resenting her, perhaps even killing her eventually. So think of a Back to the Future scenario where Marty's siblings are vanishing in the picture. Cid's future self is doing that. When older Joe comes back to kill the rainmaker and younger Joe makes it to the farm, Cid's future life starts to change. And it almost becomes a battle to save him from the person he becomes. You can see that person as well as the good in him throughout different points in the film. And it wasn't until the very end, when Suzie is able to calm him down and the younger Joe kills himself, that the path that leads him to being the Rainmaker is eliminated. Joe closes that loop, so Cid actually has a chance to do something good with his powers.
Completely bogus theory imo. The whole importance of Suzie being mother of one of the kids who could be the Rainmaker was to show how far Bruce Willis was willing to go for his own self-interest. As if killing an innocent child was enough, he now has to kill a child of a person he cares for and with which he has been intimate. Joe's relationship to Suzie was the important factor here, not the kid, whom we know nothing. That girl turning out to be the Rainmaker would be as silly as any of the bad twist endings of an M. Knight movie. Plus, why would the daughter grow up to hate the loopers and that crime syndicate, when Suzie was perfectly happy making a living as a w****. Joe offered her an out, and she refused. If anything she should hate her mother for being a slut.
saw it a bit earlier today. i didnt think there was any question who the rainmaker was. the one thing i am wondering, was the whole TK plot just simply to setup Cid's character? the entire time i kept thinking back to the TK talk and how downplayed it was with people just floating quarters and not much else. then you have Cid who can do what he does. seems like they would flesh that out a little more...why is it Cid had more powerful TK?
The theory that its the other kid and not Cid is interesting and makes sense in some ways, but I'm not sure anyone could get to that position of power without Cid's TK powers.
I don't know- I felt sorry for Willis throughout the film and thought the kid was an *******. That's probably because I a) Don't like kids and B) Had trouble rooting for someone who grows up to cause mass chaos and violence. With Willis' character- I know that his wife will turn him around.
