The writer of this article is right; Royce is a big time attention w****. He needs to switch his focus to basketball first. It looks horrible that his teammates are busting their asses in practice right now while he's sitting around starting twitter fights with everyone.
Look, John Lennon made the impact that he did as a symbol for world peace first and foremost because he made great music. Royce should be smart enough to know this. He needs to make music on the basketball court first and foremost to widen his audience and use this avenue as an instrument for change. The problem I have with all of this is that it's doing more damage than it would be doing in a positive manner because its keeping him from being a successful basketball player by missing training camp, and missing his opportunity to even make it as a professional basketball player. If he can't get on the court, all of this is for nothing. Lets make some music on the court Royce. #playforthecause
I read it as "It was never (about) getting on the plane, but about limiting stress. The fewer the better (flights).
if this chump never suits up for us in a game due to mental illness, then won't the league office grant us an injury exception that can be used to sign another player? maybe it's still possible extract at least a bit of value for this screwed up draft pick...
In a profession where the job involves playing in front of crowd of up to 20K people, I'm pretty sure there are plenty of attention whores in the NBA. In the end, it's about whether Royce White has the skills to be a contributor on the court. If he does, none of this rather minor drama matters. Remember this guy Ron Artest/Metta Peace? Royce White's not eve close to Ron in either the "attention w****" department or the mental issues department. And neither Royce nor Ron are even actual scary bad guys compared to, say, Ruben Patterson.
Injury exceptions are worth up to 50% of the injured player's salary. So, in White's case it's gonna be $800K or so. Not really worth anything.
And another instance of our fanbase being completely terrible and insensitive to a players needs/health. This is pretty much the definition of what a high risk, high reward player is. Newsflash, you have to address the risky portion of that choice. You don't just say "oh well, didn't work, and move on". You find a solution that works for everyone. REALLY? Lets just change this around a bit.
Royce, the trust has been broken when you refused to show up when the training camp started. You will not be trusted anyone.
ya, except that i don't share your optimism for 1) white being able to eventually get his head in the game and become a steady contributor or 2) for his talent or skills to have a niche in the nba game. so even an $800k player is still better in my eyes than a completely wasted draft pick
This. I never understood the attitude around here about risks. Morey would often be lauded for not taking a chance on guys, but when he drafts a Morris or White everyone freaks out. Some folks here want guys like Oden, but then complain when we take a chance on White instead of taking a low potential guy like Zeller.
offensively... -this f'n chump has a non-existent jumpshot -this f'n chump's bread and butter is powering through defenders in the paint area -- not going to happen against nba big men (didn't even happen against SL big men) -this f'n chump is effective in the open court, but it's all predicated on him getting defensive rebounds so he can take it coast to coast. unfortunately he doesn't have the length to snag boards off of nba big men - this f'n chump is an effective half court passer at the high post. unfortunately teams are just going to leave him open there and dare him to clank his J defensively... -this f'n chump is going to get abused by nba big men who will just go over the top of his tweener frame
I resisted commenting until now. But this is getting scary. Feeling sorry for White. However, NBA IS NOT A CHARITY and the Rockets are not OBLIGATED to put up with a MAD mind who somehow thinks he is a MENTAL CRUSADER.
... and reinforcing the impression on people's minds that it's a waste of time dealing with a person with mental illness.
He's a public figure now, obviously his tweets will get out. I don't even have a twitter, and I know that this guy has been in tweeting wars while his teammates are practicing. Very bad form.
Maybe he shouldn't be called a chump. But the rest is still true. To me, he might deserves being called a chump not because of his illness but how he handles it. BTW, Yao Ming was criticized for being too slow and clumsy. No one thought that was insensitive even though he had no control of his physical inabilities.
