Exactly. I would like to see Royce be proactive about overcoming this particular fear of his (he's obviously working on the general anxiety thing with docs). Perhaps that will come in time. If I'm the Rockets, I'm cool with him taking buses while he learns to adjust to the NBA lifestyle, but after a year or two, I would want him to show signs of progress. You would think that after a few months of flying with no problems with the team, he would adjust. I think that is a realistic expectation.
I'm more worried about the film sessions that thye usually play when on road trips. Maybe mandate that Royce have a team rep with him so that he does watch the tapes nad read the reports?
Holding out of camp is not the way to handle this. Not cool and though he thinks this in his best interest it's really going to hurt him this season.
We drafted him fully knowing his condition, it's part of our responsibility to take care of people we draft. Get your head out of your ass you ****.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Rockets verbally promised him something but royce wants it written. Lin said the same thing himself. Nothing is confirmed until it is on paper. This is one player against a massive organization people need to quit with this whole the Rockets are victims thing. The rockets are looking out for there own self interest and players have to look out for there own, that is why players have a union. He isn't making these demands because he is a prima-donna he is making these demands because of his illness. The way people are overreacting reminds me of the **** show over Lin's free agency. People looked stupid at the end for jumping to conclusions once Lin came out about everything.
AGREE. There are ways to overcome the flying fear and he's going to have to find what works best for him, but taking a bus is not going to work from a team concept.
There's a way to handle things and a way no to. He's a professional now, he should act like one and work with the organization to handle this without missing camp.
I appreciate that Royce is trying to handle this professionally. However, this is something that should have been resolved months ago. Further, he does not need to be tweeting or talking about it until it is resolved. Honestly, the Rockets do not need to make any unreasonable accommodations for Royce. How is he going to practice, watch as much tape with his coaches or be part of the team if he is taking a seperate bus? Further, how can the Rockets count on him? What is next? How do they know he won't start missing cross country flights?.... they don't, the season hasn't even started and he is flaking out. Royce has had "issues" in the past, and this is not all about his anxiety disorder....... I have a feeling this is not going to work and he will be a bust..
White will show up on the team's terms once he starts missing paychecks. I wouldn't give an inch to White. If the Rockets give in to White, I would expect other players to demand special treatment for their "conditions" as well. Let's face it. The Rockets made a bad decision in drafting White.
This is horrible. If Royce gets his bus, will he demand something else like Maroon 5 music in the locker room or even during games to make him feel more comfortable? More important, what about other players or maybe even coaches? Will they resent Royce getting special treatment? Will they demand special treatment themselves? Will Kevin Martin and Jeremy Lamb get to opt out of the weight room by claiming a fear of muscles? Will Omer Asik demand that Les build a shawerma stand in the Toyota Center? Will Motiejunas make the Rockets provide him whatever it is that those Lithuanese want in life? Will Chandler Parsons get his own traveling dermatologist to monitor his acne on the road? What about Morey? Does he get a translator to help him relate to humans? It is absurd.
There is a ton of overreaction on this thread. Not even surprised. Everyone is blaming Royce and nobody is even considering why the Rockets didn't even handle this a lot earlier.
The Rockets seemed pretty confident it wouldn't be an issue after being questioned about it on draft night. Well, I think it's an issue...I'd say probably about the worst case scenario for the beginning. The Rockets haven't given any indication this is what they expected. They seem completely blind-sided, and don't appear to fully comprehend the condition or they would have been all over this much earlier.
Basketball teams travel demands are very high and sometime dont even have time to practice and although I understand this guy has an illness this is very alarming.N.B.A. players are relentless with exploiting weaknesses and trash talking so what is this guy going to do when players start going in on him ,go hide on his bus. They need to go B.A. Baracus on him and start hiding roofies in his oatmeal.Get this guy an indorsed by Ambien or something
What if he hides the severity of his illness before the draft? Did he ever talk about this "bus request" or possibly more demands not yet revealed in the draft interview? Not saying White or the Rockets are the villain here. But it's not wise to put full responsibility on the team either.
I'm guessing they assumed they'd have all training camp..where they're constantly around one another...to work this out. They were blindsided by the fact he didn't show up for a date that he knew he'd need to be here for months ago. He could have gotten to camp by any mode of transportation he liked...instead he is using his absence to negotiate an accomodation. Yeah, I'm not thrilled with that. I'm fine with the Rockets exploring ways to accomodate him...and I'm sympathetic to what he's dealing with internally....I just think he's gone about this in a bad way.
Bleacher report just had an article about the top rookies who were going to struggle and he was on it based on his "condition" and he went off on them on twitter asking" what condition"?something aint stirring the kool-aid.
