Another thing I hope White doesn't do is use the media as leverage in these "negotiations" while using Mental health as some kind of pulpit. I hope to God he can keep this stuff out of the press because it only distracts the team; his team, that he hasn't even played one minute for.
Sure I will give you that and it is all fine but I think people are missing the point and just attacking what I'm saying because they think I'm attacking White. To the contrary, I'm concerned about him and think he is getting poor care. This latest news, that he wants to travel by bus, illustrates my point. It shows that he is engaging in avoidance behavior that will ensure he will never beat the disorder. Any therapist worth a damn would try to get him on that plane and do serious exposure work on that problem. Instead their focus seems to be on enabling and accommodating
Didn't John Madden as coach of the Raiders travel by bus sometimes, or was that only after retirement as a commentator.
He's already turned this into a pretty big pain for the Rockets. Im all for him receiving proper care, but I think he's placed the Rockets in a pretty tough situation and Im not really liking the directions things are going, specially now with the bus talk. At some point, if he cant handle the day to day stresses of the NBA, he needs to step away from the game and get help without involving others. His life is more important than a game, so he should focus on that first and foremost. Im a White fan, but Im slowly not getting excited about him as a Rocket.
I agree...and Im very disappointed in his request to travel by bus. Its not good for him or for the team. This is a bad situation.
I'm all for him skipping this season if that's what it takes. He'll, we gave Motiejunas a year overseas (different story I know) so why not tell White to just go figure this out and either decide by carnext week or skip the season and get help. Btw, Carl I don't know about Madden
Yes he was if he wanted to play in the Summer League. That is the rules. After that, Les has the power. I'm basing the rest of my deduction on Royce saying this wasn't last minute, and knowing Les's history. And I did state that was my assumption in earlier posts. So, yes it is a deduction. But the deduction is based on a core fact that White was forced to sign the UPA in order to make Summer Leauge and the fact that Yao Ming had the power to negotiate prior to the draft as the clear #1 pick. If White was a clear #1 like Anthony Davis, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have signed the UPA so early in order to make the Summer League roster to prove himself. He would not have felt as compelled to prove himself and would have made his signing contingent on his demands being met.
I would assume it is just Dallas, SA, OKC, Memphis and NOLA. The rest he flies, no? Didn't he say only short travels. Look at it this way. If you and me leave Toyota Center lockerroom for a game in Dallas, OKC, NOLA or SA and you drive to the airport and wait through lines and I start driving, I might beat you to the hotel. What's the big deal? Players just chill and play on their iPads and listen to music. Plus, if he is more comfortable on a bus, the dude might spend the time watch game film and studying vs being on edge in the airport and on a plane and wanting to medicate. Maybe he just wants to get out of caring bags as a rookie.
I wonder if the Rockets would still have drafted Royce if they knew the maintenance would begin on the very first day of training camp.
Do I understand this correct. He is asking for a bus to drive short distances that he says he will pay for? What is the big deal.
something tells me he's asking for more. Bus to short distances being one. Probably more to do with everything related to travel that takes him out of his routine that is important to his treatment. Bus is something easy to explain to the media.
Yep, I agree. What was the big guy from jazz, luther ? He had mental problems. The mich st defensive end in the 90s, greenwood, had issues similar also. Its just too much imo. I find it hard to believe that when they vetted this guy , they didn't see something like this coming. Travel by bus?
He's asking the Rockets to use a new team plane, one that's better and safer than the 30-year-old 727 they've been using to haul the team around. He also asked that half of the plane be modified into a bedroom, so that instead of staying at hotels, Royce will sleep on the plane.
The rockets had to have know what they were getting into when they drafted him. So just give him what he needs to feel comfortable. It is foolishness to try and force him & bend him to there will. Nobody knows whether he has good handlers or not everyone is just sharing there opinion of a situation they have no idea about. They committed to him, reap the benefits of that commitment.
Well, can we at least agree that Morey and staff did a far better job of information gathering with White than CD and Rudy did with Eddie Griffin (who reports say they never interviewed prior to the draft).
00RocketsGirl should ask to get her intern job changed to coordinating corporate client travel on the Rolls Royce suite and being the hostess.
One thing that is interesting that I just thought about is his publicist mentioned OCD in her statement. I hadn't heard about him having OCD before but maybe I missed it. Makes me wonder if this is strategy for legal challenges since OCD is considered more of a biologically based psychiatric condition by insurance companies at least. Maybe they are posturing for a potential future legal case if it comes to that.
You could also say White and his agent downplayed it, to help his draft stock. Really, only Royce and his doctor really know how bad it is. It's up to them, well Royce, to decide how much he tells the teams who wanted him. If the Rockets were led to believe Royce had developed better control over his anxiety and could suppress it on his own, if given some time, then the Rockets may not have found it necessary to make it into a bigger deal. Hard to know at this point. Neither side is going to throw the other under the bus, not now, at least.
