Why should I walk away? I am a psychologist who works with disabled Veterans every day. What is your basis for understanding the situation? I have Veteran patients who struggle with PTSD and have to deal with jackass bosses, criminal coworkers, and all kinds of horrible stressors, but none of them can say to their bosses that they demand that they are nicer or that their environment be less stressful. Get real dude and get a clue! People comparing Veterans who lose limbs to White's anxiety disorder are really grasping at straws. And frankly, it's disrespectful to men and women who have fought for their country. If you can't see that it's not the same, then you are just not that smart. Like I have said in earlier posts, when you have an anxiety disorder you have to face your fears. Expecting your employer to tiptoe around your anxieties is unhealthy and countertherapeutic. White's focus should be on him being able to cope with these new stressors and not expect someone to take the stressors away. Seems like he probably has a lot of enablers in his camp that have let him get away with this so far, but I don't think the Rockets play that.
I think you have been talking out of your ass. We don't have enough information to comment intelligently about White's situation, or the Rockets' response.
The debate last night was whether meds were effective in treating social phobia which wasn't really very relevant to this topic. We got sidetracked but my whole point is that you need to face your fears to overcome your anxiety. That is anxiety disorders 101, so what exactly is your point?
Bill Bradley, You don't know what you are talking about. See REEKO_HTOWN's post. Plus, put aside Vets for a second, people in the Army and Marines fighting right now can dictate their work environment wrt to stress and anxiety. That is a better analogy than talking about Vets. White appears to be in an ongoing negotiation with management, and he seems to be fighting a cause that extends beyond him. His publicist should have the Union speak for him, too. Look, Yao Ming's handlers dictated his work environment as a rookie, too. Curious thing is what would happen if a homosexual outed himself after draft day and said at media day that the team and league still hadn't addressed his needs for a positive work environment.
Like everyone on this board, I am just speculating based on the information that has come out thus far and everything I have seen and read about White. Isn't this the purpose of a message board, or should we all wait to give our opinions?
The lack of communication you describe is very necessary now because they are dealing with a much bigger legal issue now. Hence the recent radio silence by Royce on Twitter, and the Rockets choosing to not answer questions publicly on the issue at hand. This doesn't seem like anyone's fault necessarily. Mental health, and worker disabilities are something that has probably never been addressed with players unions and major national sports leagues in our country. There is a reason why these leagues all have workers unions. Its a very unique working situation, and the rules are always changing. The timing of this situation is very unique. I could see this becoming a much bigger issue with other leagues as well. We have seen this in the past in the NFL(Junior Seau suicide, etc.). I would be surprised if the Rockets were able to handle this on their own without the league's involvement.
How don't I know what I'm talking about? I am the only person making sense here. No, people in the military can't dictate their work environment. What do you mean by that? I have never heard a case of someone with an anxiety disorder dictating their work environment. So White should be a special case because he's in the NBA?
That doesn't appear to be the issue now. The issue sounds like White is asking for a suitable work environment like Yao did. I don't think this has anything to do with White fearing to face his disorder; his track record on this is completely opposite to that thinking. I would say that Eddie Griffin is a better example of someone who feared to deal with his issues....no Royce White. White appears to me to becoming a champion of a higher cause in these negotiations, which could have saved Eddie Griffin's life.
Why am I not surprised that the Neaderthal shrink with the "anyone who doesn't holler at you to cope is an enabler" mentality ends up working with vets. SMH
Based on his political alliances I don't think Morey will be very supportive of "handouts" for White.....................................
Great points HP, and the Vet's example was simply referring to a "worker with a disability" situation. Should have known someone would run with that example in ignorant fashion just to grind someone's gears.
nope. Yes they can in the context of this illness. Yao Ming dictated his terms of employment with the Rockets. You are completely mistaken. stop it.
Sure, you know me so well based on a few comments on a basketball board, enough to call me a neanderthal. I am sure that I have accomplished more in my life so far and given more to society than you ever will, so let's stop with the personal attacks. There is such a thing as enabling, and avoidance is the biggest barrier to overcoming an anxiety disorder. I understand this and you don't. Doesn't make me a Neanderthal, but it does make you lacking in knowledge.
The way I read it...with the publicist intervening and call...then claiming "no one is blaming the Rockets"...uhhh, sorry but that's exactly what you're doing Royce. No one's out to get you or exploit you. I like the guy and all, but...the audacity for he and his publicist to go public with this (let alone the timing of everything) is not professional. How is this any different than TMac telling the media he was injured and required treatment (surgery) before telling the Rockets? This is not to denigrate Royce and his legitimate health issues, but from reading the latest report, I genuinely believe this could have and should have remained a private issue.
