Don't laugh, this is a real issue for people suffering from panic attacks brought on by anxiety disorders. The fear of having panic attacks is just as potent as fear of other originating cursors for anxiety.
Well my thoughts are he may be fearful of the unknown, being in his first training camp. He needs to get comfortable with his surroundings first, which I think he will. My concern would be what happens if he leads a team to the playoffs -- and then literally doesn't show up?
I disagree... For the most part he's brought in ALL high character guys. Yes he takes a chance here and there on drama... See Gerald Green, Kirk Snyder, Von Wafer or Joey Dorsey... But the list of players with good characters far outweighs the bad
Doesn't sound like hope to me; it sounds more like he's giving the Rockets the benefit of the doubt and assumes they'll do right by White, with basically no evidence that they will. Morey's statement sounds like it was written by the team lawyer to avoid accusations of discrimination over a psychological condition. I expect they'll treat him with kid gloves through the season and excuse his no-shows; but I'm also guessing that Terrence Jones just moved up the depth chart.
Actually, Doc, can we truly say that he is either AT camp or NOT until the potentialities collapse at the point of observation? We might employ Fenyman diagrams to illustrate the likelihood of each, but the order of magnitude of represented by the current potentials is too great to reliably predict at the moment. A better course of action might be to just wait and see if he shows up at camp. Even then, however, can we be certain he is still there when we are not looking?
My thoughts are with this kid. As someone who suffered through anxiety and panic attacks, I can tell you that it blows massive chunks.
Did Morey do his due diligence with the kid. I only heard of his fear of flying which is bad enough with the travel schedule the NBA has. John Madden had a fear of planes and traveled by train and cars but the NFL only plays one game a week. Did White ever miss games because of anxiety attacks in college? If he did and Morey was aware of it, he can only blame himself for selecting him so high up in the draft. Have to wonder if he has an anxiety attack at the start of camp how is he going to fare under the pressure of playoff races and a regular NBA season.
PTI is gonna talk about Royce White here soon. Royce White: Rockets drafted White knowing his anxiety but a bigger problem: White didn't show up for camp. Does this have to be a significant issue in the pros? TK: I know anxiety. This will be an issue. Making all the games in college not the same as 3 games in 4 days. Houston knew this and I think they'll try to work it out but yes, an issue. ... I suspect this will be a life changing event. He'll [either] leave the league or deal with it and make it happen.
