Right off the bat, I'll tell you that I'm not a super religious guy. In fact, I think It's safe to say that I'm agnostic to a degree. Anyway, I digress. I saw this today in a Podunk gas station/BBQ joint. It struck me as really blasphemous/sacrilegious: Spoiler This is the pinnacle of Christian holy symbols and someone thought it would be fun to put a stupid catchphrase on it. It's not that I am offended, I just rail at the principal and double standard of it. What's next, a star of David that says DERP on it? I just can't wrap my head around how the hardcore southern Christians who would buy something like this would consider it ok. (on a similar note, I think the over-use of patriotic imagery has cheapened its impact and importance. Murica, **** yeah. )
I'm pretty religious and I wouldn't get offended by it. It's just a piece of wood at the end of the day. It means nothing if you don't believe in what it stands for. yes yes I know, who knew that Fright Night would be able to teach such a spiritual lesson :grin:

There is a large group of what you would call Cowboy Christians today. They go to Cowboy churches and have stickers with a cowboy and his horse kneeling next to a cross on the back of their Chevy trucks. I really don't have a problem with it because I don't make an idol out of the cross, but do I personally think it is dumb, is another question.

You see that more and more as you drive towards Dallas. Seems a little off since its essentially catering to a certain socioeconomic group, but whatever floats your boat.
I myself would find it to be completely tasteless and lowbrow, but not being exactly pious (or redneck) it would be hard to say it would offend me on a spiritual level. In my opinion, anyone leaning to the "What difference does it make with fairytales" variety of statements is rather trollish... I mean, if you don't believe, or at least empathize with the question's intent, why bother? Just to get a cheap jab in?
Nah, no cheap jab. I said what I meant. I have integrity and I respect religion and religious faith. Putting a meme on a holy symbol seems wrong to me. If you can just deface it as you see fit, what's the point of the symbol in the first place?
Pretty sure the symbolism depicted in the pic refers to the Christian cross, though. OP : There is no right answer to this. The "Cowboy Up" phrase on the cross isn't meant to be insulting to the cross or Christianity, but a call to Christianity (well, and a call to merchandising, too, probably. lol). I've seen it on all kinds of stuff like necklaces, t-shirts, etc. The reason I don't think there's a right answer is because it's religion and open to interpretations. There are many people would say the cross itself is blasphemy based upon "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth" ... but that's another can of worms.
