did he have troubles in college ? if he plays fine on court but can never do media press conferences... im fine with that
Sure, psychiatrists will probably focus on meds but that doesn't mean it is an effective treatment. Listen, if someone is afraid of heights what do you think would work better, putting them on anti anxiety meds their whole life or getting at the actual root of the problem and having them challenge their fears. There are several treatments for every problem but they are not equally viable and no treatment matching studies show that meds work better than exposure therapy for some people. Again, find me a study backing your claims.
i dont think it is his anxiety, he has been playing basketball for a long time, big games, little games, road games, all kinds. if anxiety was the issue then i dont think he would have gone to summer league. maybe he has family or some other issues and is a very private person who does not like telling people his business. hopefully he will be back ready to ball soon
I'm not quite so enamored with his skills. I just thought it was a classy move by the organization. You say that its something that they should do and I agree. Just thought I'd give credit since some organizations would not publicly show support in a situation like this. They could have said, we should cut our losses and run, but they didn't.
At the 2012 NBA Scouting Combine, White measured at 6'8" and had the widest hands—11.5 inches (29.2 cm)—of any player participating.[60] According to Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg, White was able to bench-press 185 pounds 29 times in pre-combine workouts. This would have bested the current NBA draft combine record of 27 repetitions set by Jason Keep in 2003.
Psychologists cant prescribe meds...so maybe his perspective and experience is different than psychiatrists. But meds are definitely helpful and necessary in many cases. Just completely depends on the individual and the phobia.
Show me a clinical trial showing anything is more effective than exposure therapy for some people. And who are these people for whom exposure therapy doesn't work?
I dont think anyone is saying meds are the solution or that exposure therapy isnt the best form of therapy...but many times, meds help the patient ease into exposure therapy. There isnt a one and done solution when the mind is in play. Multiple forms of therapy can be used...and sometimes, the combination of therapies is the best way to treat a disorder. Its not as simple as...do only exposure therapy and the problem is fixed. Completely depends on a case by case basis and you should know that.
Sorry but studies comparing exposure therapy and meds show that the former is superior. You can't medicate away a phobia. It is common sense.
It is largely the most successful but that does not mean it is right for everyone and is often needed in conjuncture with other therapies... Sink or Swim usually results in sink for patients with significant anxiety disorders. Royce needs to make the decision to come to practice (As elementary as it sounds) I hope you are more sympathetic with your patients than you are with your sports teams. As noted by others here.. Royce is clearly having anxiety about anxiety. He seems to be concerned about his future anxiety which is causing him anxiety in the present. Periods of transition can be especially difficult and the guy is about to be in the NBA. Think about that.. I'm sure he has. Media, Games, Travel, Criticism... That's a lot for anyone to take on especially while dealing with an anxiety disorder. The Rockets need to have a strong support system in place for him. If he needs a therapist, a family member, etc.. to travel with him.. make it happen. In a similar vein that Yao had Colin Pine to help with his transition.. Royce White may need someone he can trust and feel comfortable with and in situations like this.. be able to communicate with the coaches about. I believe the first year (maybe even two) will be difficult, but I believe Royce can do it. Parsons has reached out to him and I hope his other teammates do. I think we'd be wise to be great fans and support him through this. (Now when he starts pulling up for deep 3's, of course we can release the hounds)
You're not understanding the point. Nobody is saying meds are the superior form of treatment to exposure therapy. Meds can and should be used in some cases as a supplement.
From Feigen: http://blog.chron.com/ultimaterocke...e-white-not-in-camp-did-not-travel-with-team/ Curious about Morey's "no comment." Wish White the best. Again, my pet theory is Royce had an anxiety attack after finding out what kind of place McAallen, TX is. Got scared of the snakes and Mexicans.
Well okay, perhaps meds can help take the edge off in getting someone through an especially difficult time but that doesn't make it an effective treatment. Ultimately the person needs to face their fears while not taking meds. But by and large the data do not show that adding meds increases benefit to exposure therapy.
Everything you said is probably true. But that said, its a decision Royce should make with his doctor/therapist. The advice of a guy who has no knowledge of his medical history/background and has ONLY seen him on tape should not be diagnosing the guy.
What the hell are you talking about. When did I say that exposure therapy didn't work? You said MEDS have nothing to do with it, which is utterly and completely false. http://fampra.oxfordjournals.org/content/17/2/114.full This study suggests the best form of treatment (in this particular case) is medication AND exposure therapy, medication alone also improves the conditions. Of course, this article should be taken for a grain of salt because it's just one evidence. Nevertheless, you will never find an article where medication is proven ineffective in treating anxiety disorders.
You are confusing me stating facts with not being sympathetic. Perhaps his docs are treating him the way some of you are suggesting by handholding and giving him meds and it is not working! Hey I just hope he is getting the proper care. This debate about meds vs exposure therapy is getting off topic.
