For someone who knows nothing about anxiety disorders, how long is the recovery (I don't even know what word to use) process and if Royce doesn't get the right treatment, could it be serious enough to prevent him from playing this year?
There is no set recovery time, it depends on the individual and circumstance (and type of anxiety). In some cases there are certain stressors that if removed can cause almost immediate recovery. In other cases it has to be monitored and dealt with into perpetuity. In the latter cases you actually have to be taught how to re-structure your thinking patterns to avoid anxious behavior. I couldn't imagine a case of anxiety could be bad enough to prevent someone from playing sports, it's usually not that acute for long periods of time. I could be wrong..
I don't know his exact diagnoses or issues obviously but if it was just social phobia or a specific phobia he could be successfully treated within a couple of months. His problems are highly treatable. It is impossible to say about whether he could miss the season because that is largely up to him and the care he receives. Posters here are treating it like it is a medical illness and it is not. It is a behavioral disorder and the key to his recovery is his working hard to face his fears to overcome them.
Some guy was saying how he could hold a basketball when he had an attack. He would have problems walking. There are cases.
When will Royce White, aka Ryan Leaf, show up? You would have thought GMs would have learned about drafting players without mental toughness by now.
That's not true, exposure therapy is only one form of treatment amongst many others, medications included. Different people respond differently to various forms of treatment. You as a professional should know that.
You don't know what you are talking about. Go find me some research showing that any other form of treatment is more effective than exposure therapy for phobias and then post about it. This is not debatable.
they should... support him his not doing anything illegal or immoral... his just not well....at the moment.. royce is top 5 draft talent... nba ready body.. who can defend post rebound and play like a pg
Just because exposure therapy is the most effective, doesnt mean that holds true on every individual....and even if it is the most effective on every individual, that doesnt mean that other forms of treatment arent necessary for full recovery. Im surprised at how dismissive you are of the phobia...two immediate members of my family are psychiatrists and they have a different perspective than the one you are giving. There are no definitive answers in medicine like you are making it seem.
by the way, is his medications legal to the NBA? he might be seen with traces of substances after random testings..
What are you talking about? You are the one proposing that exposure therapy is the "best treatment" for anxiety disorders. I'm stating that exposure therapy is not the only form of treatment because people respond differently to different types of treatment. Medication is always used in a lot of cases to go along with behavioral therapies. You cannot evaluate the effectiveness of a treatment of someone you have never even spoken to.
Its easy for an organization in that situation to take a step back and re-evaluate their choice and even give up on the guy. It takes more patience, faith and class to stick by their pick (though you could look at that and say its just covering their a**es for making the pick in the first place). By not staying silent, the organization sends a public message to Royce (I'm assuming a private one has been sent as well) and cuts down on some of the speculation as to what happens w/ Royce's future w/ the Rockets if he can't get this figured out soon. Takes the pressure off him a bit.
