I really like and support Royce and I'm excited to see him play. Having said that, what happens when he misses a playoff game because of anxiety issues? I know most people here would be ready to crucify him, but I would place the blame squarely on Morey (who I also really like and support). I thought we had a fairly strict "no headcases" approach to the roster. I understand that Royce doesn't have attitude or aggression problems, but c'mon. Dude is deathly afraid of flying and couldn't even make it to media day because he's anxious? Get him on the right medicine or find a new home for him. He's way too talented to be letting mental problems interfere with his career this early. EDIT: I read through the first five pages at work, got busy and didn't bother to read the rest of the pages in between because I thought it would be more of the usual CF "piling on a dude for no reason." Having read a few pages back, I feel like an *******. If Royce had a death in the family, I sincerely apologize.
Sometimes the medicine makes things worse though. Unless your Royce himself you don't understand what he is going through even if you yourself suffers with anxiety issues.
PTSD is a different thing altogether. It is harder to treat but is also treatable. Problem is, most veterans never get help for it because avoidance is a hallmark symptom. I work at a VA hospital for The National Center for PTSD so I am not pulling this out of my ass.
We don't even know exactly why he's out. I think people are way to quick to judge. It's sad. We've got idiots saying it's mental and he can overcome it if he wants to. That's all well and good, but we don't even know why he isn't at camp. People are all up in arms because they think they have an answer to what's going on. News flash, they don't...
I have severe anxiety, and I take meds for it. I've been to counseling. It is very debilitating on random days and especially when I do something big (interview, perform live, even confronting someone). It's not just some mystery label that is given to nobody that you know. I'm sure a fair amount of members here have it and are not proud to share it. Have a little respect. Entertainment and even money are less important than health and well being. If Royce is having issues now it doesn't mean he can't acclimate and overcome. EDIT: That being said, we STILL don't know what's truly keeping him sidelined.
everyone is different... some soldiers are okay some are not... every case and severity is different,,,,
We don't even know if he's going to show up tomorrow, and every day he doesn't show up is a distraction.
Thank you so much for sharing. This is what I am trying to stress. People are talking about him getting his act together and dealing with his issues or shipping him away. Goodness. Listen I get that you have a lot of experience in this but once again no single case is the same. Unless you are Royce White's doctor or Royce himself you can't judge. Maybe he can't come to practice or maybe he won't come to practice because of his anxiety. Nobody knows.
my work mate called in sick... the whole office could not concentrate and stopped working .. we all went home
If you have professional and personal experience then you should know what you said is not true. Anxiety disorder is just a general term, there are many forms of anxiety disorders. Such as OCD, Phobias etc. Many (not all) of these have a biological basis, and in many cases medications are required to go along with therapy. Saying that the best treatment of anxiety disorder is just to "face it" is completely untrue. Yes, there are such treatments where they treat anxiety disorders such as phobia through the process of flooding. Overwhelming the patient with the stimulus. However, in a lot of other cases you need other forms of therapy.
My initial statement was that words like "can't" aren't appropriate here since of course he can. Some posters here are acting like social phobia is deterministic. It is obviously a real and potentially debilitating disorder, no doubt about that. Anyways, when I saw that video of him focusing on his problems I thought he was receiving poor mental health care and I stand by that. There are a lot of bad therapists out there and he may have one. He may insist on continuing to see this guy because he's the only one he trusts but I think he needs a new plan.
the stigma of mental illness and why people keep quite is due to the reactions like this... if white has the flu.. we all say get well stay home... if white has mental illness issues,,,, people attack him as weak...saying.get over it...
And my initial statement is that you don't know anything about his care or his specific situation despite your personal experience so you can't say "of course he can".
Exposure therapy, aka facing your fears , is the best treatment for all anxiety disorders. There is no debate in the field about that. And this is ESPECIALLY true for phobias. In fact meds are minimally helpful and may be harmful because they hinder the exposures.
The symptoms may manifest themselves in different ways but hiding or avoiding from your source of anxiety is never the answer.
Man, i wish we knew what was really going on with Royce. I know it's got to do with his anxiety but for it to happen now is unfortunate.
