    Well known indeed

Even the taxi drivers and hotel doormen knows JLin and asked if I'd seen him play in NY. Lol. The answer is no, I've not had the chance to do that, too busy working and traveling. Hope one day I will, maybe when the Rockets come to NY...

I'm really excited about this team and will be checking out as many games as I can. Usually I like to relax at home and watch the games, but a couple of my vendors figured out that I'm a huge Rockets fan so turning down their tickets would just be rude, right?

is he 'well known' in those countries, or is it just that an occasional person knows about him? because obviously there have to be people in every country who heard about him simply because ESPN is so big and people use internet everywhere.

i'm skeptical because I'm from Lithuania, and it's supposed to be a basketball country, basketball is far and away the most popular sport, and Lin isn't well known here. Some people do know him, but it's incomparable to long time stars like LeBron, Kobe, Wade, Nash, and you can also add most stars who play at international tournaments (Dirk, Gasols, Tony Parker, Durant and such). Not to mention Messis, Beckhams, Ronaldos, tennis superstars etc.

Of course Lin is more popular in asian countries, than in Lithuania or Europe in general. But I can speak for Germany and Linsanity was pretty huge. Maybe because the Knicks are among the bigger names here, but right now, Lin is going to bring a lot more media coverage, Scola, Lowry or Dragic could combined.

Didn't want to create a new thread for this, but ... 82.games.com shows a player's Simple Rating as a function of his production and on court/off court rating.

    http://www.82games.com/1112/1112HOU.HTM

Every Rockets player with a positive Simple Rating except Martin has been traded away, and Martin is likely to be gone before the trade deadline.

The pro-tank group should be happy about this ...

what...I live in Germany, media doesn't talk about NBA at all and no one cares about Lin or the Knicks(except for Rockets fans).

Pretty huge=in your local basketball club?

Your starters, barring injury, to begin the season are:

    Lin
    Martin
    Parsons
    Asik
    PPat

    We're gonna bring
Machado, Lamb, TJones, Donuts, and Royce off the bench.

    The questions really are:
    1. Who is the first off the bench?
    2. Who are the primary 3 off the bench?
    3. Which of the rookies doesn't play and/or gets sent to dleague?

Now.......it would not surprise me if we trade Patterson at the trade deadline for a future first round pick. And it wouldn't surprise me if after the All-Star break/trade deadline that the starters weren't entirely different. But to start the season, your starting 5 are Lin, Martin, Parsons, Asik, PPat.

PS To put in perspective for the US folks, German media barely even covers the German league, there's only one program that sporadically broadcasts like one game per week and rest of the media doesn't even talk about the season.

Ask a German about NBA and he'll say something about Dirk and Mavs.

The only time you hear about Basketball is during All-Star Weekend, when news sometimes show a two minute clip of the game and talk about "slam dunkings" and how athletic and big these guys are.

    Basketball is nothing in Germany.

To correct my post, there is no regular mainstream coverage here, that's true. I meant the big sports news sites, usually talking about Dirk, LeBron and Kobe - they all headlined Lin, and he's still present.

And 'no one cares' isn't true either. Basketball is growing in general, the Mavs are in Berlin next week, so it's getting better. Bring in a TV deal and people watch.

One game every matchday, that's not sporadically. Just the name Bayern Munich will make the whole game a lot more popular within the coming years. Plus, the big tv stations do at least show results and summaries of playoff matches. It's not THAT bad.

Of course Asian countries make up over 50% of the world's population so technically they would be correct :)

Lin is the discussion no matter what the thread or topic is about. Lin is the ultimate thread crasher.

Calling Lin the most famous athlete in the world is for sure exaggerating. But I'm curious about the word "unfortunate" here as well. Why would a fan object a player of the team he supposedly supports being famous worldwide? Inquisitive mind likes to know.

Couldn't agree more. It's better to be underestimated than be overrated. It's better to stage a sneak attack. Pre-season prediction isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

But I have to question all the pessimism in here. Why do you support a team if you think it will tank or won't win over .400? Come on, have some faith!
