I liked the movie more than Inception. They were both great movies, but this one kept me interested throughout the entire film.
Never saw Inception. Might go see this flick. If not, I'll wait till the University has it in their theater for $1 tix.
I think the only problem I had with the movie is that the trailers were misleading. Commercials I felt were building it as a sci-fi action film, but it's not. It definitely has some brutally violent scenes in it, but it's not an action film by any means. That said the movie was damn good. There's a lot of story in it, and a lot of backstory to get through, but I never once felt bored. And while I had a pretty good idea of where the film was going, the ending still did a good job screwing with your head. Not many characters to sympathize with in the film. And the last 1/3 of the movie or so moves in an unexpected direction, kinda of like Sunshine in that regard. But I thought it worked well. It was still a little jarring to see JGL as a younger Bruce Willis, but I think he did his homework. And Bruce Willis had some total bad ass scenes.
Why is this being compared to Inception so much? Just cause of JGL? Plot and cinematography were completely different. I liked Looper, not amazing, but very good original film, which is hard to find nowadays.
Good movie but not great. It's been a relatively weak year in American cinema this year so I would definitely recommend this (and End of Watch too) if you want to see a movie and be entertained (I liked The Master but it's not for everybody). I did have some minor nitpicks but the set design, cinematography, editing, score and dialogue were all were great and the concept is pretty original imo which goes a long way in my book. You don't see many legit Rated-R sci-fi action flicks anymore. I liked this much more than Prometheus, Inception.
They're both non-space, mentally challenging science fiction centered around themes of personal loss and redemption. As I said in an earlier post, they are definitely unique, but still have a similar feel. Nothing to do with JGL as far as I'm concerned.
Mentally challenging? Sure, my "typical" movie standards but it's nowhere near as complex as Inception. Blunderbus, lulz.
Question about the movie Spoiler I wasn't sure on why the future mob was killing the loopers. I thought the rainmaker was the boss but when they said he worked alone I got confused. The only thing I came up with is that the future head bosses didn't want the rainmaker to come for them so they got rid of all ties. Anybody got any idea?
Spoiler Rainmaker took control of all the mobs; he did it alone because of his TK powers. He was closing the loops I think to get rid of any connections to him and also perhaps because of a personal vendetta against them.
Spoiler Oh, he took control alone. When they were talking about it I thought they were saying he killed the loopers by himself. I guess that's what threw me. I thought it was a pretty good movie regardless.
Spoiler Rainmaker in the future took control of the mobs himself. A theory is that he started "closing all the loops" in the future to prevent Sarah from getting killed by the looper to begin with.
Have not seen the movie, but why not send the guys from the future into the middle of the ocean....rather than get some person to shoot em?
I kinda figured that the time machines could only transport you in time, not to a particular place. So the loopers go to the spot where the time machine is in the future. Although I don't think it's ever really explained in the movie. Most time travel movies work that way though.
Because that would be an entirely different movie and for another screenwriter to come up with in the first draft...
