I actually think the rocks would do well to help to keep the Boxers nails short. Mine has very long Quicks so on week night walks she walks on the cement, on weekends it's park day to get rid of all the energy. You will HATE those sharp nails when they're puppies and are learning to "box". They cut deep. As for breeders, I just found mine through Lonstar Boxer Rescue.

Reading through this thread makes me grateful! Mine doesn't drool, rarely farts, was house trained in 1 month but she's scared of EVERYTHING. I was walking her last night and she almost had a heart attack when she came upon a fake Pumpkin in a neighbors yard. So embarrassing. She's also only 45 pounds at 1 year and a half. My wife loves that, I wish she would gain 30 pounds lulz.

Oh, and my pup is like a meme here on the board for blasting my wife's face. Awesome.

Yeah, she has a major under bite.

Boxers are great dogs. The best IMO. I got a boxer mix to avoid the drool. My girl is boxer mixed with lab so she has a bit longer snout and no drool.

VERY high energy. It's not a couch potato whatsoever. Mine could play 23 hours a day with just 1 one hour nap.

I also forgot to say, get used to their snoring. They tend to snore very loud. I dig it though, puts me right to sleep since she sleeps on my shoulder.

If the price of a puppy seems like too much, you can't afford a dog.

    Do some more research.

We also recently adopted a boxer from Lonestar. His name is Nicky and is about 8 years old. Nicky's tongue hangs out of his mouth and he definitely is a drooler. He's not that gassy anymore since we added pumpkin to his diet.

We got Nicky after losing our 8 year old male boxer Kobe to a brain tumor. That's probably the only negative thing about boxers is that they're prone to cancer. We've had several growths removed from our 9 year old female boxer but she's doing fine. Boxers are awesome dogs and like others have said they're great with kids. They're also great watch dogs as they are always on alert whenever somebody's near the house or in the driveway.

With the summer heat we keep our dogs indoors during the day. I'm not sure if you ever got your boxer puppy but it will definitely be worth it.

Lots of time and attention for puppies. Their first year is critical!

I highly recommend a crate for housebreaking and separation anxiety. Don't abuse the crate like leaving the puppy there all day then let him out for a few hours then back in the crate at night.

I would come home during lunch to let Bo out to potty every day at work. I made sure to not leave him longer than they can hold. Once they're a bit older (after 6 months) then they can hold for 7-8 hours.

I'm thankful that we didn't have a hard time with his housebreaking and nipped his separation anxiety in bud. He was crated until he was 1 year old during the day then he was only allowed to be roaming free in our bedroom for a year then now he has the run of house. He is 3 now. No chewing issues except a few incidents when he ate my work out gloves twice and hubby's shoes.

Boxers are HEAD STRONG so definitely need some training. Bo was REALLY terrible with me when he was a puppy. He is a dominant dog so he kept trying to dominate me. My husband did not have any issues with him because Bo would listen to him. So we sought out a dog trainer that did click training. That helped a ton! She also told me to work on my bond with Bo by feeding him all the times, walking him for 45 minutes-hour, and doing eye contact exercises. Now I'm happy to say that he is an angel! He definitely calmed down a lot.

Boxers tend to do the "burn the energy" runs (sprinting around the yard) when they're young. Bo doesn't do that anymore...only once in a while. Boxers need a LOT of exercise and attention. A 10 minute walk will not cut it. I try to take him on walks for 45 minutes 4-5 times a week after work. I take him to the dog park once a month so he can run around.

As for the health issues, please be VERY CAREFUL with boxers during the summer and warmer months with high humidity because they can overheat EASILY because they have a short snout and they can't breathe normally. So don't take him to the dog park or run him in 90-100 degrees weather. Take it easy with them. I cannot stress this enough. LEARN the signs of overheating if you're an owner of a brachycephalic dog.

Boxers are not meant to be outside dogs. They crave a lot of human contact. Bo is really needy and always want to be with us.

As for drool, Bo has recently started drooling. I think it's funny. He doesn't drool that often, thank goodness. GAS is is like Whoa! He still has it even on a raw food diet.

Overall, a boxer is a truly gem. I love my Bo. I can't imagine my life without him.

We got ours from a breeder but I would say look at Houston Boxer Rescue and Lone Star Boxer Rescue. There are a lot of boxers that are being dumped by owners because they simply "can't" handle them.

If you don't think you can handle a high energy dog then don't get a boxer. Get a shiztu instead.

    HA, good one.

Boomboom, i didn't see your comment about your backyard. they will be fine. No worries. :) You can buy Mushers if needed for hot weather.

Forgot to mention that Bo is allergic to kibble so he is on a raw food diet. Boxers are prone to digestive issues but with right food, you can manage them.

I love boxers and their scrunched up faces!!

    Thanks for the info Di!!!

This would be a dog that is primarily for my wife and kids (although I've given some thought about taking him/her jogging...which sounds like it would be great for the dog). Fortunately, my wife is home during the day so I'll have someone around to keep an eye on them while they're growing. Also...having a very energetic 7 year old boy sounds like it would also be helpful.
