This baffles me. For those cars with automatic headlights, it's not really a problem, but why in the hell doesn't electricity to the headlights just cut off once you take the key out of the ignition? There is no good reason I can think of to not have had cars wired this way. If you ever need to use your headlights for a little bit, you're going to turn on your engine anyway.
I'm talking about the cars that sometimes you leave the light on by mistake and come back to find your battery drained.
The only thing I can think of is that needing to turn your car off due to engine trouble or being pulled over on the side of the road or something when it is dark out you may want to have lights working without the need for the car to be running.
Or pretty much any number of things you could be doing outdoors (setting up a campsite, repairing something after dark, cleaning a deer, etc....) where you want some good light and don't want to listen to the engine and breathe exhaust.
The "accessory" setting is for that, I believe. I think he's referring to the older cars and some new ones that allow you to turn on the lights at any time WITHOUT having the key in the ignition. Maybe someone realized you could need your keys AND the lights on at places where you hadn't thought you could. But, in contrast, it also makes you responsible and disciplined to remember to turn them off at all times. That's just my opinion.

Yes, and that's what I'm referring to, thanks, my old truck is like this. Also don't see how using the "accessory" setting would make me any less likely to walk off and leave the lights on (only use it when I want the radio on too). Just checked, brand new truck is like this too. Don't see the big deal either way, actually.
