Not exactly. The Japanese asserted control over the islands in 1895 during the First Sino-Japanese War. Japan lost control of the islands in 1945 and they went under US control where they were mainly used for target practice by the US Navy. The US gave the islands to Japan in 1972 while at the same time both the ROC and PRC asserted the islands belonged to China. So Japan had lost the islands in battle and it was only the US decision to give them to Japan why they currently have it.
I just don't understand why did Japan need all these "commotions"? Priro to this March, it was an island on the backburner in the midst of things. China cannot ignore its neighbors, neither should Japan.
So China thinks they should get it back since the US took it from Japan, then returned it to Japan? That makes no sense. The US should just float an aircraft carrier over there to shut everybody up
so blatantly naive train of thought. LETS SEND TROOPS AND WASTE EVEN MORE MONEY SO WE LOOK MORE POWERFUL THAN EVER
Basically the island is not under China or ROC control because they did not have the power to control it, all this means is when China is powerful enough, it will just take it back. This might not happen in the next 10 years, but I bet it will happen sooner or later.
You kidding? China intervened pretty strongly in Korea and Vietnam against USA, and as recently as 1979 fought against Vietnam.
Brantonli mentioned it, plus all the territorial disputes with other SE Asian countries (Vietnam, Philippines).
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-17890929 Just because some guy doesnt make a documentary about china killing dolphins automatically does not make Japan the worst offender of overfishing. China is worse simply due to their massive population
uhh, i was genuinely asking for actual facts/figures/stats on this. it was my understanding that even though china is the world's biggest consumer of fish, that a sizeable percentage of that is simply farmed fish. and more significantly, they are not after the highly-prized endangered species like tuna's. i agree that china is no great preserver of the wild either (although they have made efforts with pandas and more recently in combating tiger/elephant poaching). but as far as the sea, unfortunately the population of japan has an insatiable appetite for the biggest, best and most rare species in the oceans... here's one somewhat relevant article i just found: http://www.worldfishing.net/news101/report-china,-japan,-us-lead-fish-consumption The preference of consumers in Japan and the US for top predator fish such as tuna and salmon means their consumption has a relatively larger impact on the ocean environment, according to the report.
They do have a big chunk of farmed fish but they killed wild-fish to make feed/food for the farmed fish lol...
isn't fishmeal made from fish not even fit for human consumption, like tiny bony anchovie...and also from various discarded fish offal
US took it from China and gave it to Japan. And US have been into many wars in that area. I do not see anyone got shut up.
China will be a worse offender than Japan, objectively. Over-fishing is a serious issue around the sea near China. The Chinese fishermen will be after everything until there is no fish left. No, if just for the sake of fish, I will leave the island to the Japanese.
