You would think he's more of a JVG type of coach especially being a big man but doesn't seem that way. He has said he wants to push the ball and emphasize defense. Also, I think he's being forced to play it this way because lack of big man and star player but I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do with all this good young talent.

He's just warming up the seat for the next guy (Finch maybe???) until we get better

He has the team run pick and roll EVERY DAMN PLAY.

This is likely why Vets were bored and disliked him. After playing for the offensive guru that was Rick, McHale is a bit... eh the polite word is "simple."

Nothing wrong with that strategy but he doesn't know anything else. It's just one on one all the time. He will kill that **** the first quarter. Scola was on fire the first quarter but then the opposing team caught on after just the 1,345,765 time. Oh scola scucks now in the 4th now. Wonder ball. Same thing for pick and roll and mismatch. People calling coaching overrated is bull****.

Thanks for all your comment. The responses seem to suggest there is not enough data to make a reliable evaluation of his coaching. I guess we just have to wait & see how he fares with this young team.

BTW, I don't have a good feeling towards this season with our young roster, mainly because the Rockets has little post thread down low, and that usually is the key for any team to win enough games in a long 82-game season.

I dream they can compete for a playoff spot, but I won't be disappointed with a 30-52 finish IF the young guys can develop over the course of the season.

Way too early to judge his coaching. This is his opportunity to have a full camp so he really has had the cards against him so far. His job is to motivate and get guys to work hard and I truly believe he will be able to do that here and he has good assistant coaches to implement what is going to be the plan. I like him personally and I think that he did a decent job last season, lot of people disagree but until the collapse at the end everyone was saying good things about him and we were in playoff contention. I like finch to be our long term solution if McHale doesn't work out but I am not on the board of wanting him out yet. Personally I think 2 to 3 years (counting this coming season) is what is needed to decide. We going to have a very young team that can either surprise a lot of people and make the playoffs or we can have growing pains (which is expected) and continue to gain experience and get better. Failing to make the playoffs in a couple years will be what would lead me to want him gone. Cards are still against him with a very young team but one thing going for him is he has been in the situation the young guys are now and can help lead them and teach them how to be successful.

LOL I keep saying this but Mchale's "terrible" mgt decisions weren't that bad, its just that in those days scouting wasn't as advanced as today and GMs routinely made bad moves, for example while he essentially traded Allen for Starbury, he also picked up KG, Al J and Love, who happens to be the best player on the Wolves today even after 6-8 top 10 picks.

I mean seriously, in comparison Kahn has drafted way more busts and right he's actually an average NBA gm. So I think Mchale wasn't that bad, esp. if he GMed in today's world where we have all the advances in scouting tech and you can hire number crunchers to forecast cap moves.

As a coach, he's pretty much clueless, I mean the dude auditioned for a GM position, if he wanted to be a coach he would have coached the wolves, not managed them. However in today's NBA you can hire a bazillion other people who can do the actual coaching and Xs and Os, so really having a very low coaching knowledge isn't a big deal. What's more important is you can get the players to respect you and follow the **** you're saying, rings command more player cred than actual X and O knowledge (as Gundy found out with Howard and Shaq).

Also, his style is old school, he demands effort, discipline, and accountability, which is necessary since we have young guys on the team who can become TD-like or Eddy Curry-like depending on the environment. I wanted Finch or RA's 2nd hand man to take the job, but Mchale isn't a bad choice, for a first year coach he did quite well IMHO.
