On the way home, I'd say nearly half the people switched lanes or merged into traffic without using turn signals. Is it laziness, incompetence, maybe both?

One dbag in a sports car thought it was cool to go ~100mph and weave between lanes while refusing to use his blinkers. He nearly hit a minivan that was switching into the lane he was about to enter. A woman made a right turn without her blinkers... so I couldn't get on the feeder earlier and had to wait another couple of minutes for the traffic to lessen.

I sympathize with drivers that don't use them in rush hour where people speed up to prevent letting you switch lanes if they know you're about to enter their 'space'. However, not signaling isn't worth the risk and habit formation.

I don't think it's really necessary to use turn signals if there isn't someone within 30 meters of you on the highway. But I think everyone should use turn signals when they are on streets and are making turns.

In Houston, signalling you want to change lanes tells the guy in the other lane to speed up so you can't cut in front of him. You have to change lanes before he can react.

THIS. Why bother signalling if you're going 10 miles or more faster than all of the uninsured motorists and grannies going under the speed limit.........it's not like you're impeding their progress.

People just don't use common sense or just out right refuse too. If someone is entering the on ramp of course they are going to want to switch lanes to avoid exiting. Also, see this all the time. Someone has their blinker on for few minutes and the dumb ass driver int he next lane won't let the driver over affecting two lanes of traffic.

The thing I dislike is when you are driving 80 on a 65, the driver behind you tries switching lanes and passing you, so annoying.

This is the reason I usually don't use blinkers on the freeway. On streets I almost always use them.

Joke's on you. I never turn my blinkers off, whether I'm turning or not.

Yup. I can't stand it and it irks the crap out of me when a driver doesn't use a signal when I'm waiting for them to pass but then at the last minute see that they are making a turn. You see someone is waiting -- use your damn signal!

The driving culture is one of the biggest differences I have noticed between America and Canada. Up north, if someone signals a lane change, 9/10 other drivers will make an effort to let them in. Imagine that.

I'm living in Calgary right now, and the difference in driving cultures is HUGE. There's certainly fewer dicks here, but I've noticed that the ones who are are often very passive aggressive.........their increase in speed to close a gap to not let you in is almost imperceptible............but it's definitely there. But I shouldn't complain......drivers ARE much friendlier here, and I'll probably come back to Houston as a much friendlier driver myself (at least for the first month or two).

I don't get how people say drivers here in town are bad.

Houston drivers are some of the nicest I've experienced in the States. Most of the time if you put your signal on, the other driver will let you move over.

If you want to to talk about obnoxious drivers we can discuss driving in Boston or northern New Jersey.

I consider myself a pretty confident driver, and Boston can be downright scary. I'd rather drive in Manhattan.
