Why don't other carriers allow that. To me, it would seem like it is not that big of a deal to allow talk and data at the same time. Maybe there is more to it that I think.....

I believe it was a design decision by Apple. The reason other CDMA/LTE phones work simultaneously is because of dual antennas - one for CDMA and one for LTE. The iPhone has dual antennas, but it uses them simultaneously to improve signal strength & call quality. For Apple to have simultaneous voice & data on CDMA carriers, it would have needed to add a third antenna.

    Here's a better/more comprehensive explanation: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2409716,00.asp

CDMA technology can't do simultaneous Voice and Data. And that is what Sprint and Verizon, for some reason still use.

GSM is the new (still old) technology that Tmobile, ATT and every other carrier worldwide uses.

CDMA actually can do simultaneous voice and data, all Verizon towers received a firmware update in December of 2010 to allow this. However only the HTC Thunderbolt is capable of doing it (and yes, I mean EVDO-A 3G, not over 4GLTE). It used a special chip set from Qualcomm

Since it is not consistent with Verizon, they even told their reps to not mention this feature to customers.

    http://m.engadget.com/2011/01/31/htc-thunderbolt-might-be-getting-simultaneous-voice-and-data-on/

Also, CDMA is newer than GSM technology. 3G on GSM carriers was provided via WCDMA.

LTE on the other hand is new and is GSM based. Its also quite awesome I might add lol

That's what mine says as well. I'd expect an October 5th arrival date, but there's certainly the possibility that it could come a couple days earlier.

can someone explain to me how the phone service is transferred from my old iphone 3gs to the new iphone 5? i went through the iphone 5 activation process and chose the "restore from backup" option. the new phone didn't have my phone # in it, i saved it in the new phone where you type it in, and the old phone is still working with the phone service. what the f#*k did i miss? argh!

Did you back up your old iPhone first on iTunes? Once you back up your old iPhone, you should be able to get all your numbers when you restore that backup on to your new iPhone. It's really that simple.

As far as service goes, that should automatically carry over to your new iPhone once you activate it but I would turn off your old iPhone and then try making a call on your new one to see if it works. Generally though, once you activate your new one, it disables the old SIM in your iPhone 3GS and activates your new SIM in the iPhone 5.

Hmm weird. Assuming you have AT&T as your carrier, there's a thread on MacRumors that says AT&T is having problems with activations. One person suggested this:

    https://www.wireless.att.com/activations/

    Here's the thread:

Apparently, you have to call in to AT&T to activate. I had no idea; nobody told me. lol. I called their support line to get help and it directed me through some bs to activate it.

I thought it would just do it as part of the process or something. Silly me. It's all good now.

The LTE is faster than my wireless n at 5 Ghz on my new linksys wireless router. Sheesh.

Thats pretty neat. Makes it good for future used iphone customers that want to buy them on craigslist for use with cheaper carriers such as SimpleMobile.
