Is Romney one of the 47% moochers who don't pay taxes?

Reid on the Senate floor today

Thousands of families making more than $1 million pay nothing in federal income taxes each year.

    Is Mitt Romney among them?

We’ll never know, since he refuses to release tax returns from the years before he was running for president.

But from the one return we have seen, we know Mitt Romney pays a lower tax rate than middle class families thanks to Swiss bank accounts and Cayman Island tax shelters.

And we can only imagine what new secrets would be revealed if he showed the American people a dozen years of tax returns, like his father did.

So, is Reid suggesting the elimination of off-shore tax havens? Or is he merely calling out Romney on it while not mentioning all the others who engage/benefit from its existence?

If Obama and the other dems had some balls, they would have been talking about this a long time ago. This shadow banking system & complicit tax system written & passed by our representatives has been around long before 2012-hundreds of years in fact-& will likely go down as merely campaign rhetoric when estimates show $20 to $30 trillion are held in off shore accounts.

The answer I want to know, if re-elected, will team Obama actually do something about it? This is all $ stolen from the public treasury under the aid of politicians anyway.

Obama has talked many times about reforming the tax code to close loopholes. As part of the $4 trillion compromise he proposed to break the deadlock over the debt ceiling included a proposal to reform corporate taxes to bring back revenue from offshore.

Has he ever specifically cited 'off shore tax havens in Caymans & Switzerland' that only the corporate elite benefit from as a champion of the people? I've heard him refer to loopholes in an overly generic sense without giving specifics. He's drawn an income line in the sand at 250k to appease his base without mentioning his donors like Romney who benefit from this structure [multi-millionaire earners mostly on cap gains]. IF we're to see change he, or any politician for that matter, needs to tackle this issue head on. Until then, they're all the same IMO protecting the flow of private wealth and socializing the losses.

    Extended reading on the problem.http://www.taxjustice.net/cms/upload/pdf/Price_of_Offshore_Revisited_120722.pdf

Wow, he's got an axe to grind with the government feeding poor people.

    :(

And he's tossing that red meat to his supporters because he knows that's what they want to hear. They hate the poor, and they hate the fact that the government is helping them buy groceries.

And this is what the GOP has become, a political party in opposition to using tax dollars to feed hungry families.

    :(

So Romney is an arrogant one percent-er? So what, so is virtually everyone in DC including Obama. Incidently, the Cobert piece on Romney is absolutely hilarious. Anyway, even though I think Romney is a "country club" Republican, I am still going to vote for him. I think he can better assemble a team to confront the fiscal crises we are in. Team Obama has simply taken us in the wrong direction. Time to bring in some fresh faces. Vilify at will, won't change my vote.

It isn't always the same team that helps elect that governs; there will many subtractions and additions. Yes, his core of advisors will likely be in the Whitehouse if he is. They really haven't done a bad job. Given all the advantages that Obama has including the major media outlets in his pocket 24/7, not bad at all. We are talking about a statistical dead heat. The debates will seal the deal.

it's sealed already. obama is going to win by a landslide unless mitt quits before people even get a chance to vote. mittens is angry, frustrated and about to explode. i can't wait for it to happen. it will be great entertainment.

You do know Romney's economic and foreign policy teams are retreads from the Bush admin right?

Yes, some are, but not Karl Rove. There will no doubt be some fresh faces. It might be a good strategy to announce his cabinet if elected.

For those expecting a landslide in either direction, I think you will be disappointed, UNLESS, one or the other candidates gets killed in the debates. The objective measures favor Romney. The most effective spin machine (mass media) is with Obama. I still say the debates will determine the outcome.

Ooh, yes. Please announce a Romney Cabinet right now. What could go wrong with that? You either appoint crazies to satisfy the base, but that drives indies to Obama. Or, you appoint reasonable people and that pisses off the base. Not to mention giving the media time to dig up dirt on appointees and make the last weeks of the campaign one big drawn out Romney defense of a couple of potential Cabinet ne'er-do-wells. Yes, announce it today please.

    Chaos on Bullsh-t Mountain:

Juan of House Stewart has a good time with Fox News frenetic damage control remarks over the Romney tapes:

The best part though is the last few words of the second clip...

basically, the REpublican/Romney/Ryan message these days is one of these mythical "job creators" who build things all by themselves, but who whine and blame the governemnt when they fail. Basically, they're for personal responsibilty - when it's for taking credit. Blame? That's another matter...they didn't build that!

Edit: Here's the transcript of his closing remarks:

I know that Obama has talked about off shore tax havens and the practice of corporations and wealthy people hiding revenues. I think he has even criticized Mitt Romney for having Cayman islands accounts. That said I think you are placing too much blame and expectation on Obama. He can't pass legislation solely by himself but has presented proposals to Congress regarding addressing offshoring revenue and reforming taxes.

That is one of the most rational and sound arguments I have heard to vote for Romney compared to the most of the stuff I hear (he's a Kenyan, Indonesian, Wahabist, Socialist, who is going to take away our guns, health insurance, Medicare, traditional marriage etc..).

I asked you this in another thread, his "team" is the same bundle of right-wing economists (Hubbard, Manikiw, Hassett) that John McCain and George W. Bush did (moreover, they come from the same schools (Harvard Chicago etc) that Obama's do). THey're real "fresh faces" allright, we haven't seen them since 2000-2008...!

Even worse, his "plan" to the extent there is one, is word-for-word the same as Bush and McCain's.

Tablign the fact that the President and his "team" don't control the economy and that running a buyout firm has very little correlation to actual Presidentin....why do you continue to express confidence in Romeny's "team"?

You haven't really identified a single valid reason why any logical person would do so.

Sure, until you either discard the fiction that the president controls the economy, or assume that he does, and then actually examine Romeny's team in this regard and/or their playbook.

But with the bar set so low...
