The tax policy that I assume you support, given your support for Romney, currently allows him to pay less than 14% of his income in taxes and the policies he says he would put forth in a Romney presidency would result in even lower taxes. This has the effect of redistributing money from the middle class, many of whom pay a far higher percentage of their income in taxes, to people like Romney.

It is redistribution, from the middle class to the wealthy. Claiming otherwise is just lying.

I support the fair tax. Income tax is bull****. Tax rates in our current tax system means less to me than what tax system we have. Too large a system, too easy to manipulate.

Also taxing in itself is not redistribution. Depends how the money is spent.

Progressive tax system isn't just about fairness, it's what drives the economy. If everything was a flat tax you'd basically have a lot less wealth overall in this country.

People like you just don't grasp why because you don't understand economics well enough to know that the U.S. economy is driven by middle class consumer spending - not rich people having massive bank accounts in the Bahamas.

In the 1980s, Romney didn't just believe in redistribution. He was a beneficiary.

I would've responded to this thread, but this is what I would have said, so I'll just quote it.

This is excellent news for McCain, Palin and whoever Obama was running against in 1998.

For the record: I'm not trying to justify Obama's comments. Although I do appreciate his not-beating-around the bush with these comments.

And how is taking money from, say, CF.net and giving it to the military not a form of redistribution? The sophistry used is of no importance; whether the justification for the robbery is "social justice" or maintaining "our" borders or just for fun, the result is still the same. In the end, income is being redistributed. In my mind, that makes it a form of redistribution.

that was my point earlier. 'redistribution' does not refer to any time money is redistributed. It refers to legislation that redistributes wealth (or some other commodity) for the specific intent of ending some inequality. As in:

    http://www.thefreedictionary.com/redistribution

    http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/redistribution

    http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Redistribution

When Obama says he 'believes in redistribution', he is not referring to any policy that spends money and therefore, as a side effect, redistributes wealth. That would be meaningless. He is referring to legislation with the specific intent to diminish inequality in wealth (or some other commodity).

Spending tax payer money on the military would not fall under these definitions. As to your specific case of taking from CF.net and giving to the military, this is not redistribution because the intent is not the diminish some inequality.

Now now, just to be fair, we should pull some choice quotes from Mr. Romney too, circa 1998.

Wait, what? You can't do that because he used to be a liberal then?

I always hate it when I see people argue over wording, and yet here I am.

I am well aware of what Obama means, and I don't disagree with you that such a policy is destructive.

Coercive redistribution is a method of achieving, among other things, so-called "social justice." The economists I read distinguish between coercive redistribution and the redistribution of income via the free exchanges of free individuals. And I don't think the distinction is trivial. That's all I'm saying here.

Any income tax is a redistribution of wealth. We've had redistribution in this nation for decades. Almost every American is in favor of it.
