Looking to purchase flight tickets but don't know where to go. I know priceline or whatever but I read that you can get cheaper flights on the carriers websites. Basically looking for specials like Southwest's Wanna Get Away deals but they never seem to be flying to the cities I want to go to.

Anybody know any good websites or perhaps cheaper lesser known carriers?

http://www.kayak.com/flights - Searches multiple travel sites
http://www.studentuniverse.com/ - If you're a student or faculty at a university you can get good deals through there.

The deals on carrier's websites are usually for short notice flights to certain cities, so if you're trying to plan ahead they may not work for you, but it doesn't hurt to check.

    You mean United.com?

I try to fly Southwest. If not, I go to United.

Direct to the websites, don't really mess with priceline and whatnot.

Just check all major airlines. If you have miles with an airline you could get major discount by using your miles (even when you cannot get free ticket) many times.

I usually use expedia, sometimes orbitz or kayak have better deals. Most offer the same deals as the carrier, just more convenient to have them all in one place.

Search using Orbitz or a similar web site. To buy, check out the actual airline web site.

For years matrix.itasoftware.com was by far my favorite site to use; it was the hidden gem of the internet.

They were bought by Google a few years ago, so now you get the same tech simply by using a normal google search; it's awesome, and the only times I use expedia or orbitz is to get extra points on my credit card.

travelzoo.com -- then click the 'supersearch' tab which will search other websites simultaneously for ticket prices.

I've been using cheapoair.com quite a bit, usually has the best prices around.

I stumbled on google.com/flights and haven't looked back. It shows you how the prices trend and what window may be the best time to purchase in advance of your trip.

    step 1) Bing.com/travel
step 2) check southwest.com since Bing doesn't cover it (rarely use this step since southwest usually has connections)
    step 3) book
